Wow, great find. Indeed more season three then four. I do like it, but the new look they apparently later went for is better.

Interesting find; a more 'generic' look and definite Hendry/Gale-era 'Avengers' logo.

That's a great find Jaz! Is that John Stamp in the bumper design? It's interesting that on his first day as graphic designer on the third series of The Avengers he was asked to play the "running man" in Jerome Gask's title sequence. I wonder if he still gets a royalty... Very Happy

Hi Paul,

It certainly looks like John Stamp's work doesn't it. I'll post some grabs of the original opening and closing credits too if you like.

cheers

Jaz

That's the first time that I've ever heard who designed the opening titles.

Love your signature pictures, the images look so clean and colourful.

That would be great Jaz - would love to see those.

Darren - yes John Stamp made many trailers and bumpers for The Avengers. He started on series 3 and quite literally stamped his mark on the pop art style of The Avengers. I'm not sure if he created the fourth series main titles but - after studying his other work - it does look like his work.

John Stamp was Head of design for Thames TV for twenty years and worked on series design for everything from Kenny Everett to George and Mildred! He's also an actor and has appeared in "Tales of the unexpected" as well as other roles.

I didn't know John Stamp acted but I see he was in two Tales Of The Unexpected eps, plus And Now The Screaming Starts (written by Roger Marshall and directed by Roy Ward Baker.

Original series 4 end credits are now my signature. They go left to right, top to bottom, so interestingly Laurie Johnson is credited before Patrick Macnee.

Hope you like them!

Yes, I like them and although I can't really judge from a few screen shots, I think the eventually used version is better. But it is interesting to see that initially the Avengers wasn't to change that much from the season 3 to season 4 transition, as we now also know they wanted to keep Dankworth on.

p.s. It's hard to imagine it with Laurie Johnson music, I keep thinking of Dankworths tune.

Laurie Johnson always received credit before Patrick from Season 4 on.

This is the boxset I'm most looking forward to. I hope my father's memory was better on this one than on his audio commentary for Death of a Great Dane. Problem is that it is nearly fifty years on.

Nice graphics. A kind of season 3/4 hybrid. Thanks, Jaz.

Oh, I like them! Very Gale era, definitely. You could make a great pop art print out of those. Very Happy

They look great. The typeface is interesting as well - is that the same as the one used in the 3rd season? I'm glad though that they changed them and moved away from that high contrast photo look - a look which i always think is definitive of the Honor Blackman era. For the Rigg era and beyond we start seeing the gun sights, hearts and roses graphics on publicity and trails. An attempt to give the series a sense of "brand" perhaps?

No, it's definitely not Bureau Grotesque One Three, but somewhat similar.
And it's also not Compacta, which was eventually used for the Emma Peel episodes.
