Hello everyone,

Hope I've chosen the correct area to post, please let me know if I haven't!

My name's Jo Whitby and I've been an Avengers fan for as long as I can remember. First introduced as a child to the New Avengers and then caught the re-runs of the Peel era episodes - the rest is history. I used to frequent the forum over on Avengers Forever many years ago as a teen. It's great to see there's still an active Avengers forum!

I'm currently at university in Cardiff (as a mature student I might add, haha) and am preparing for my dissertation next year which I have decided will be about The Avengers and in particular, the masculinity in the series. I will be comparing the Peel era series to the movie also. Just giving you all a heads up really as I may wish to pick your brains or just have discussions about topics I come across with other fans.

Anything else to add... hmmmm.... well, my favourite era if you haven't already guessed is 1965/67. Steed is my ideal man and one day I would love to own a Lotus Elan S3 1966! Need to learn to drive first though!

I'm looking forward to participating in the forum!

Thanks for all the lovely greetings! I need to find myself a suitable profile picture now.

Yes, really looking forward to writing about The Avengers. It's mainly a theoretical look so I'm not going to unearth anything radical but still a great topic to work on (and an excuse to buy lots of Avengers material - not that I need an excuse!).

Thanks again for the welcome.

Had a word with my tutor today and she's totally changed my angle! Haha! I shall now be looking at Culture and Identity and also Fandom (how fans react to The Avengers and the Avengers movie). So, at some point I will need to send out questions to fans but that won't be for a while yet.

Thank goodness I have over a year to complete it! I'm sure it will whizz by though!

Well, you have plenty of people to ask here! Are you going to be including The New Avengers as well? I have plenty to say about that. Wink

Probably not as I'll be comparing the movie to the series and I'd like to stick with the Peel era as that makes more sense (at least to me). It's going to be interesting to try and cover areas that have yet to be covered or at least not been covered in much depth.

I must use Toby Miller apparently. Off to Amazon I go...

The movie actually borrows from quite a few eras of the show, but most heavily from the Peels, yes. The Peel era's been the most widely written on, too, so you should be able to find the most information on it. Most of the stuff really "serious" stuff on Tara and TNA is scant and very biased. Confused

If you must use Miller, I advise you to tread carefully, as there are a lot of errors in his book. You might want to consult this page, which lists quite a few:
