Not even, "We are aware of the the problem, and will be issuing a formal statement as soon as we can."?

As well as a major cock up with the mastering, there's also a serious Optimum PR cock up going on. Mistakes happen but they can be rectified, and the faster they are rectified, the less lasting damage is done.

By not making a simple announcement such as 'Replacement discs will be available, but not for 6 weeks.' Optimum are going to seriously dent their sales of this and series 6.

I've waited a week or so in case an announcement appeared, but as it hasn't the set will be going back for a refund tomorrow.
3 out of the 4 sets released have had problems requiring replacement programmes. I don't think Optimum were able to issue such statements when the earlier problems came to light, either. They did issue instructions to contact an email address in order to get a postal address to return disks for replacements once the problems were fixed.

As only the season 3 set has been "right first time", it's wise to wait before buying.

Optimum have issued a statement regarding the audio issues:

Quote:
Since the release of the Avengers Series 5 box-set, Optimum Releasing have received a small number of complaints about the audio pitch levels on some of the episodes. This series was extensively restored from the original materials by some of the leading French technical labs. We are currently investigating the extent of this issue with them and should have more news soon. While these checks are carried out The Avengers 50th Anniversary box-set has been put on temporary hold.

No mention of Season Six I note, a lot of people do seem to assume this will also be affected, so its a little worrying they're not postponing that as well Confused

I thought it affected all of the episodes?

Some people seem unaffected. I still read posts congratulating Optimum on the restoration work - I've just read one on Roobarb's - and nary a word on the pitch problem.

I think it's more a case of not being sensitive to pitch, as I'm sure you mean.

To clarify, I doubt some batches are unaffected. It's just that some people don't notice it as well as others.

At any rate, this is hopeful news and what many of us had been clamoring for: acknowledgment. Thanks for the update, Alan, and I await the fix as well as the complete series set!

I suspect the announcement has a modicum of damage limitation built in... It's quite likely that the person who wrote the announcement is not technical staff (hence the mention of "pitch levels", which is nonsensical) and not aware of the full extent of the problem. I'm sure that the whole set is being looked at, not just specific episodes.

Indeed. I think that is the case, but some people seem to be able to live with it. Hense that comment from Optimum.

I haven't complained to Optimum, but have definitely noticed something amiss with the sound. How have other people contacted Optimum, because I get the feeling that the more complaints are made, the more chance we might get remastered remasters?

I'm saddened to read all the problems everyone is experiencing with the new box sets. I didn't bother with the old sets as there were only 6 episodes in each set. I have been waiting a long time for these complete season box sets, but after reading all the complaints I'm not sure I'll ever be able to replace my video collection with anything worthwhile. It sounds as if only season 3 is correct so far. I haven't seen the quality of the new sets but all these comments I'm reading is enough to deter me. I'll wait until the problems are ironed out. Speed problems with season 5 doesn't sound promising. I wouldn't be happy with any dvd's if this was noticable. Can anyone advise me on which sets are safe to buy now? Many thanks, Rich.

Optimum have made an announcement that they are investigating (and will be making a further announcement shortly) - I suggest that it might be best to leave them to it.

Series 3 was correct from the off and and Series 4 is also definitely safe to buy, if you buy new from Amazon.co.uk - but probably the best option is to wait for the complete set (currently listed for next March), which will definitely include corrected versions of all re-authored discs.

Okay, I'll wait - Optimum have done such a poor job when it comes to quality control, and yet such a fantastic job when rectifying their mistakes, so I'm fairly hopeful this will be resolved.

Thanks Alan,
I will wait as well. The Avengers is the best series ever made, so I want to be sure it is the best quaity it can be. It does sound as if Optimum are listening carefully to the fan's concerns, so that is promising. Hopefully soon, we can all own the remasters and watch this terrific series the way it should be seen. Smile Rich.

I sent a letter to the company. I think just a comment about the problem and the hope that it will be dealt with appropriately is enough. I watched the entire "Death's Door" last night, and while the picture quality is stunning to behold, the audio is clearly wrong.

I actually think it's still worth anyone's time to drop Optimum an email.

They may well be looking into it but they need to be aware of the level of dissatifaction when they are talking about only "small amount" of customers are unhappy. I didn't care for that comment.

I think that response is barely an apology and sending an email might make you feel a bit better.

It's results we're after. We cannot accept the episodes as they are, with all of the actors talking at a high pitch. Anyone who hasn't contacted Optimum by e-mail needs to do so.
