Hiya guys. I'm George, and I am starting to become a fan of The Avengers. I have bought the boxset of The New Avengers and Series 6 DVD boxset of The Avengers (even though the Forget Me Knot is high pitched in tone). I have bought two books "The Avengers: The Inside Story" and "The Avengers a Celebration". I have an umbrella which is quite like the umbrella Steed carried around in the Avengers, and am looking out for a good (black to start with) bowler hat. Its a shame people don't wear bowler hats anymore (apart from the Porters at the Cambridge Colleges (since I'm from Cambridge) and the royal family (William and Harry). I however do like to carry an umbrella round with me from time to time, and I know that I get laughed out from other people in the street, so wearing a bowler hat would be completely out of the question. When did people stop wearing bowler hats in general? Am I right in saying the 1980s?

George

Welcome, George. The 1980s was way too late for bowler hats. In fact, the '60s was way too late, except for the higher echelons of the civil service, and also men who worked in the City, in banks and financial institutions. They'd wear them to and from work, but not otherwise, Generally, as something you'd see in the street, probably not since the 1920s. It's really a Victorian fashion item.

Welcome, George.Smile

I think that the bowler was probably already on its way out in the 60's and 70's. I do recall seeing a man wearing a suit and bowler hat in the mid 80's whilst travelling through London.

Top tailors Austin Reed noted a demand causing them to restock them again after about 12 years (they've apparently started in their London stores but will eventually roll them out countrywide). Actor Jude Law has been seen around wearing one which has added to the growing popularity.

Thats what I'm thinking of then. My grandfather used to wear a bowler hat whilst going to work in the city of London.

I can remember my dad buying me a bowler hat many years ago when I was child, I think I was 12/13/14 and it never fitted right on my head, plus the sides of the Bowler did not go up and the brim was straight out flat all the way round more or less. I really would love to get my hands on the Complete Avengers DVD set, but its abit out of my price range at the moment. Am I right in saying Steed had a dark green bowler at one time in the show?

I became a civil servant in 1986 and sadly none of my superiors or colleagues wore a bowler hat then. You do see City types wearing them in early-1970s London street film footage.

We still have brollies though - need them with the weather here!

Was on the bus today thinking that its a shame that I wouldn't get away with wearing a bowler hat in this day and age without members of the public starring and laughing at me. The only type of head-wear I could get away with wearing and that a baseball cap, and I'm not keen on that type of head-wear at all. I like something with a sense of flare and style.Smile

Over here, I wear a fedora from time to time. All my friends and family think it looks great. I'm seeing more and more people wearing trilbies around as well. In fact, at my niece's recent graduation party, one of my sister's friend was there wearing a trilby. He wanted to know where I got my fedora so he could get one.

Oh I would love to wear a fedora. Homburgs are nice as well. I wore a grey trilby once, but got so many people staring at me, I thought I can't stand people staring at me, so decided not to wear it in the end.Sad

Trilbies have gotten popular enough here that Walmart even sells them now.

It seems that women can get away with wearing trilbies, but men cannot. I do like wearing hats alot, but don't as I don't want people staring at me.

Well the bowler hat arrived today and I am quite disappointed. It seems to have a feather on one for the sides of the hat, which it didn't list in the description. Plus the shape of the bowler is not like the ones Steed uses in the show, plus even though I am 61cm, the hat doesn't slide on well, its not a very good fit. So am a bit annoyed.
