Mark Waid To Write New Steed And Mrs Peel Comic For Boom Starting With Issue Zero, In August
Written on May 21, 2012 by Rich Johnston in Comics

It’s a while since Mark Waid wrote The Avengers.

In August, Boom! will be publishing a new Steed And Mrs Peel ongoing comic based on the Avengers TV show, written by Waid with Steve Bryant on art, starting with a zero issue. It will follow on from Boom! reprint of the Eclipse version of Steed And Mrs Peel by Grant Morrison, Anne Caulfield and Ian Gibson.

And that issue will very literally be based on the show. One specific episode, A Touch of Brimstone, that featured The Hellfire Club that would inspire its recreation in the pages of X-Men issues by Chris Claremont and John Byrne.

And because it’s Boom, there will be a very limited CGC 9.8 variant cover by Joseph Michael Linsner.

Thank you Midtown Comics… and good job of Boom! putting out a zero issue the month before DC Comics fill the shelf.

Here's examples of the artist's work on his previous series, Athena Voltaire:

What is a "zero issue" - and why?

That looks like a combination of Roger Moore and Ian Ogilvy in the fourth frame - the Ultimate Saint?

Eh? And I thought there is already a Steed & Mrs. Peel comic running...
Well, is this Avengers comic only about all the episode, starting with "A Touch Of Brimstone", or just about The Hellfire Club in The Avengers?
Or, I'm just a bit too dim-witted, to understand it... Confused

Sincerely yours,
Sinus1994

Zero issues are often little introductory/teaser issues of comics. They often tell some story that comes before the main storyline that starts in issue one. They can be quite short, and can cost much less to buy than a regular comic--usually $1 in my experience. It's sort of a "preview" of the comic before it starts. They've become quite common in the comics industry in the last decade or so.

There is indeed a Steed & Mrs. Peel comic series running, but it's a reprint of a 3-issue limited series that originally appeared in the 1990s. That series will finish next month. The company responsible for the reprint, Boom! Comics, has clearly decided that the reprint sold well enough to publish a new Steed & Mrs. Peel comic run, this time featuring brand new material, as opposed to a reprint. From the sounds of things, though, instead of writing a whole new story, they're going to adapt the A Touch of Brimstone TV episode into comic form instead. I'd really rather they wrote a whole new story for Steed and Emma, particularly since I'm not a fan of Brimstone in any way, shape, or form. I watched it once a decade ago, and haven't seen it again since. Confused However, I'm hopeful that if this proves successful, they'll decide to do a whole-new story next. It'd be great if they expanded their horizons eventually, too, and started writing for other characters, like Cathy and Tara.

I had the impression that it was going to have the Hellfire Club, but it would be a new story - a second swipe against the Avengers by HC... but I could be wrong!

The artist is good, and Mark Waid is a well-known comics writer, though he's also very American, which may or may not mean good things for the series. Still, I'll check out an issue,

That other article seems to indicate that's the case, doesn't it? I'm so glad, as a straight-forward episode adaptation would seem a bit pointless. I'll definitely give it a look when it comes out. Cool

I wouldn't worry about him being American. Remember the show (from the 4th series on) was written with an eye on the American market and was set in a cartoony 'Avengerland' anyway. As long as it's not too "pip pip, old bean!" I'm okay with it.

Plus: I found out that one of my all time favourite films - the very English Genevieve - was written by an American, William Rose. He lived in Canada and fought in WWII with the Black Watch (The Royal Highland Regiment of Canada). He also went on to write the screenplays The Ladykillers (another typically English film) and Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, for which he won an Oscar.

Tons of English TV show episodes in the 50s and early 60s were written by American writers under pseudonyms as they were blacklisted by the disgusting McCarthy witchhunters and barred from earning a living in their own land. The best of British TV is thoroughly fertilised by New World sensitivities. Without the American school of thick-ear "noir" Marlowe/Spillane-type private eyes we'd never have had the first few series of The Avengers anyway. When a Canadian fused that with British stiff-upper-lippedness, magic was born.

I didn't know that, interesting info. The irony is that The Avengers, considered to be one of the most British TV shows, isn't all that British at all. Smile

Hehe. You're right Dandy. Mr. Green
But if we take a look at the plot and the set, it is (very) British. Wink

Is this Comic a one off, and will it be on general release in the UK?

The new series is supposed to be ongoing as far as I know, so no, it's not going to be a single issue "one-shot." Sales will likely determine how long it lasts.

As for a UK release, I've just done some checking, and UK comic book stores have been carrying the 1990s reprint, so I'd say it's more likely than not that the new series will be released there as well. Smile That's just as well--they'd be missing rather a large share of their market otherwise. Wink

I've seen the BOOM! reprint comic in the Forbidden Planet in Nottingam on visits. Will buy the new one when it appears.
