This is one of just a couple of episodes I recorded on audio cassette tape (missing believed lost - shame Wink ) at the time of the original broadcast. It's been a favourite of mine ever since. This is, probably for me, the episode most typical of the 60's series. I mean it has Terence Alexander from The Town of No Return for goodnes sake. The rest of the cast is good too - Dinsdale Landen, Caroline Munro, Pamela Stephenson (who would be a big star a couple of years later in Not The Nine O'Clock News) and even the wonderful Lyndsay Duncan CBE, years before she would be well known.

"I am standing on a box!"

Gambit's treatment of the women in this ep has got to be one of the funniest Avengers moments ever. It's outrageous and you shouldn't laugh but it's genuinely funny.

What, Pamela Stephenson's in this one? Shocked Seems every time this one comes up, someone mentions another name--I'd only just over the shock of hearing Lindsay Duncan was in it. Which one is Pamela? (I watched a documentary series about Billy Connolly travelling across Canada just a month or so back. TNA ended in Canada. It's all connected! Laughing )

I've loved Lindsay Duncan ever since I saw her being fabulous in Under the Tuscan Sun years ago. I didn't recognise her in this until she was pointed out--she's just a baby here (well, relatively). I love her even more now because of her scenes with Gareth in this one--she's so exasperated and confused by the end of it all. But she's well-compensated for it. Wink

Lots of people seem to remember this one more than any other, even if it's been more than 30 years since they watched the show. It was a favourite of mine the first time I watched the show, though I don't know if I'd highlight it now. It seems to stick in the mind for some reason--it might be the maze that sets it apart.

Purdey's break-in gear is gloriously impractical--look at her heels! Kudos to Joanna, who manages (somehow) to climb over a wall in them.

Am I the only one who wants to hear Gambit's plastic fig leaf joke? Even if it makes me groan? Laughing

Other favourite bits: Purdey and Gambit's (surpisingly enlightening) fun with computers (Gambit can rattle off complex mathematical equations; Purdey had a little sojourn in Brazil and ended up with a tarantula bite somewhere interesting. Is this a good place to mention I spun a whole story off that comment? No? All right then). And the scene with Steed still playing golf with his bowler 15-odd years later, connecting up to similar scenes in the original series (and some, probably intentionally ironic, comments about golf from Gambit, courtesy of the Bishop of Litchfield. Gareth, in contrast, was a rabid golfer, even back then). Also, we now know Gambit eats cornflakes. Cool

And yes, Gambit's disarming of one of the Angels is pretty brilliant. I snicker at the way he sort of rolls her off to the side--you can actually hear her go "thunk" as she hits the floor. Laughing Well, it is Mike, not Steed--he wasn't going to tickle her into submission, was he?

Purdey and Steed win the ingrate of the year award for not bothering to so much as thank Gambit for saving them from death by pseudo-Star Wars trash compactor (and getting shot in the process). Confused

Whenever I watch this episode, I send fervent thanks to the TV gods that we never subjected to the sight of Steed disco dancing. Embarassed

Pamela is the 'head' Angel, Wendy.

About 40 seconds into this clip.

Ah, there she is. I always smirk a little when she sees Steed trying to inflict pain on himself, and cocks her head a little, as if to say, "Well, that can't be right." Laughing

Someone on the video commented that we never see Gambit do anything with Pamela at the end, so theoretically she could go and turn the maze back on after he was gone. This used to bother me, too, but presumably he stuck her in a closet or something off-screen before he left.

The video ran on to the start of Purdey's notorious little catfight there, and now I'm eyeing all the angels for someone else who looks familiar (other than Caroline Munro, obviously). There's one that, probably not coincidentally, looks a bit like Farrah Fawcett, but I get the funny feeling it's not her. Wink I suspect Gambit enjoys watching Purdey fight a little more than he should. Wink

Yes, the only other one I know of is Annette Lynton - she's the one Gambit clobbers. She turned up in the soap Crossroads a year or two later playing 'Helen Booth'. I have all her episodes as I'm a secret fan of the series (Shhh.)

Annette Andre was also in Crossroads for a while - trivia.

Annette Andre seems to have been on just about everything at least once (including TNA). I remember she was on Adam Adamant Lives!, and I was quite disturbed to discover she was one of the baddies. Annette's always good! It seemed to go against the laws of the universe.

The name Annette Lynton sounds vaguely familiar. I've never seen Crossroads, but might she have popped up in something else I've watched? Question

I did a quick search and discovered she is known as Annette Lynton Mason today as she is married to Nick Mason, the drummer with Pink Floyd.

She is also a helicopter pilot and was part of this TV news report in March this year.

Can't see anything obvious you may have seen her in. An episode of Minder?

I've seen a grand total of one episode of Minder--the one Gareth was in (quel supris)--so unless she happened to be in it, I seem to have missed her.

That Minder episode did have Annabel Leventon in it, though, who played Steed's old friend's wife, Wendy Clifford. She played Gareth's ex-wife in Minder, which blew my mind a bit since she was supposed to be Steed's contemporary (roughly), and there's a rather large 20 year age gap between Patrick and Gareth. I'm still not quite sure how that works--it was quite distracting when I was watching the episode. Laughing

There are quite a few "doppelgangers" from the 1960s series:

Terence Alexander, The Town of No Return and The Correct Way to Kill and Love All;

Dinsdale Landen, All Done with Mirrors;

Michael Latimer, A Touch of Brimstone and The Positive Negative Man;

Melissa Stribling, Hunt the Man Down and School for Traitors;

Hedger Wallace, Death Dispatch.

Plus Anthony Bailey, from a previous TNA episode: House of Cards.

Common ground with Steed then - I wonder if they both cut out the Wild West scenes? Smile

I can picture them setting up little cardboard dioramas to act as backdrops for Steed's toy soldiers, while Purdey looks on in annoyance in the background. Laughing

I felt the same when I watched "Lovejoy" the other night and Anthony Valentine was in it as a suspect but turned out not to be a villain for once. As to Annete Andre, her Facebook and web page are worth following; she's doing a lot for the anti-ivory-poaching movement.

It always seemed inherently wrong that Peter Jeffrey was good in Room Without a View, too. Sometimes the casting people just don't follow the rules! Laughing

So it's subliminal brainwashing, a little like in the Tara episode Split! It's a very colourful one and obviously enjoyable. Yes, liked it; Gambits kick!

That really does seem a lot of "doppelgangers"; might have some of the most. It's nice to think that The Avengers was a programme where actors might bump into each other again after more that 15 years!

I think a lot of people get a kick out of Gambit's kick. Wink

It sounds like you're really enjoying TNA, and picking out the bright spots even when it's less than brilliant. I'm really enjoying reading your comments. Smile

Who was the woman who knocked Gambit down with a high kick ?
'I suspect Gambit enjoys watching Purdey fight a little more than he should' says Timeless A_Peel. I wonder why? Purdey's ''Down boy ! More my style !'' to Gambit shows her modus operandi Cool
