SEND IN THE CLOWNS - THE YO YO LIFE OF IAN HENDRY
BY GABRIEL HERSHMAN

Screen legend Ian Hendry (1931-1984) was the star of six major television series and around 30 films. The original star of The Avengers and, later, series such as The Informer and The Lotus Eaters and For Maddie with Love, Hendry also made outstanding contributions to big movies like Repulsion, The Hill, Theatre of Blood and Get Carter for which he was nominated for a Bafta.

In this, the first ever biography of this outstanding but underrated star, Gabriel Hershman highlights the versatility and hidden subtlety of an artist once hailed as "Britain’s greatest actor" by Brian Clemens. A songwriter as well as a successful actor, whose sentimental ballads revealed a sensitive, vulnerable figure at odds with his tough-guy screen persona and hell-raising image, Hendry's final years were dogged by ill-health.

The biography reveals a multi-talented, charismatic, entertaining and inspirational figure who never recovered from the death of his second wife, actress Janet Munro. It is a touching story of "a ruined genius" (in the words of John Nettles) ultimately destroyed by his own demons. The biography concludes that Ian Hendry was truly Britain's greatest television actor, a man who had everything going for him – except good luck.

Send in the Clowns – the Yo Yo Life of Ian Hendry, by Gabriel Hershman, is available from Lulu.

David Barnes, who runs the Retrosellers site, reviewed the book and wrote: "I have read hundreds of music, TV and film-related biographies in my time and this splendid one stands up there as one of the best."

Gabriel Hershman is a journalist and freelance writer who has written extensively on film. He currently lives in Sofia, Bulgaria. Recent interviews include those with Eric Roberts, Stephen Lang and Leslie Grantham.

Send in the Clowns - the Yo Yo Life of Ian Hendry is his first book.

I am enjoying the book very much. It's a shame the odd typo has got through the proof-reading, notably Patrick Macnee's name being rendered as his reviled "MacNee", but the content is top-notch. There is some incredible 'archaeology', with stuff about Ian Hendry's early career from his friends and contacts of the time, that is mind-blowingly detailed for such a long time ago. A triumph of research to unearth such things!

The early photos of a pre-fame Ian Hendry, in his bedsit and in early roles, are also a nice surprise. Jeez, he was a devilishly handsome fellow. With that acting talent too, it's no wonder everyone was falling at his feet. And you can't begrudge him that either, as he paid such a price later. The light that shines twice as bright burns half as long...

Crikey, what project are those for? I'd love to read those.

The book includes detailed reminiscences from many big names in the business like Britt Ekland, Roger Moore, Bruce Montague, Wanda Ventham, Roy Thinnes, Annette Andre, Mike Hodges and Honor Blackman.

It also goes behind the scenes on many classic TV plays such as Afternoon of a Nymph (on which Ian met his future wife, Janet Munro), A Cold Peace and Time Out of Mind. Jeremy Lloyd, Britt Ekland, Don Leaver and Elizabeth Shepherd are just some of the people who give their perspective on things.

Send in the Clowns also gives a lot of hidden insight into the making of classic films like Theatre of Blood, The Hill, Get Carter, Repulsion and The Beauty Jungle.

My biography of Ian Hendry - Send in the Clowns - the Yo Yo Life of Ian Hendry - is now available via Amazon!!! The red arrows will commemorate the launch with a fly past over Ian's birthplace in Ipswich.

All those who have read the book are encouraged to leave reviews on the Amazon site.

Are you a fan of any of these old shows, apart from The Avengers? I'm referring to The Lotus Eaters, The Informer, The Sweeney, Van der Valk, Return of the Saint, For Maddie with Love, Brookside, The Persuaders, Village Hall and Bergerac?
The book has many recollections from people who appeared on these iconic series alongside Ian, including particularly detailed reminiscences from John Nettles, Roger Moore, Wanda Ventham, Julia Goodman and Robert Duncan.

I just finished this.

A great but ultimately depressing biography, definitely worth getting a copy to learn more about the tortured history of Ian Hendry.

My mother was an alcoholic and some of Ian's behaviour was straight from hers, there is no controlling the tendency, the story about asking a friend to pick up a bottle of brandy for him despite claiming to be on top of his addiction in particular. He wasn't fooling himself, he couldn't help himself.

The only fault I would not is that Gabriel has a tendency to make lists.
