Yeah, that one started in Noon Doomsday but the set dressing for this one is They Keep Killing Steed. I think it also pops up in Take Me To a your Leader.

That last shot is from The Great Great Britain Case (not Crime as usually said).

I love seeing these with the lighting set ups.

I'm amazed that you can identify the episodes so readily!
I've been having great trouble trying to identify them I must admit.
There is another of the same hallway identical apart from no girl and one of the chairs on the opposite wall, so perhaps they were trying out different options.

I'm well pleased to know that pic is from the 'lost' The Great Great Britain
Case, I like it even more now!

Here are some more which show lighting equipment:

Diabolical...

How did you come across these images?

I'm sure that no one has ever seen these before.

Surely there is a story behind these photographs.

Yes, I'd be interested to hear how you found them, too. They're fascinating. I love the last one with Steed's bowler and brolly lying on a table in the corner. Very Happy

I don't have a clue what this one is from. Maybe it's some unseen location from a John Bryce episode.

The Morning After and I'm fairly sure that's director John Hough at the desk.

Game (Robert Fuest says in the DVD commentary how this was a very difficult set to light the actors against as it's so busy).

Love All - one of the ministry offices, the one where Tara reads the book.

The Morning After again with John Hough.

The bar from The Interrogators.

I'm afraid to say that I don't know the full story and history behind these.
I saw them on ebay in early 2008 whilst shopping for Avengers dvds. The listing just said something like 'Avengers photos' and at first glance it looked like one of scores of listings that just sell one photo, but it was the one of Patrick with a script in his hand and it caught my eye. It was only then I realised that it was very different from all the usual photo sales.

Here is a verbatim copy of the original listing:
Quote:

Here are 114 (yes, a hundred and fourteen!) B&W photographs, some (maybe all) of which are sets from the “Tara King” era of the “Avengers” television series. They appear to be of the time, and possibly used for set design (or/and continuity), because a few of them have markings on the photos pointing to some of the props, referring to them as Old Times Putney (or OTP), presumably from where those props were hired and had to be returned. Each image is 9 ¾” x 6 ½”, within an overall frame size of 10 ¼” x 8”. Most are in extremely good condition; there are some that have some small creases and several that are marked on the image itself, as detailed below. About ten of them have actors or production staff pictured on the sets.

For description, I have split the photos into three sections. Section 1 (55 photos) were coded by episode at the time, and some have descriptions written on the bottom, which means I can be pretty certain that they are Avengers sets (further details below). Section 2 comprises 32 photographs of various interior/exterior locations, many or all of which may well relate to the Avengers, but which were not coded so I cannot tell; a few of these photos have slight creases. Section 3 comprises 27 photos of a “complete apartment” with a number of rooms, except that glimpses of the ceiling suggest that it is all a “set”. Perhaps aficionados will recognise it? Again, a few photos in section 3 have creases, and a few have marks on.

I have posted a selection of pictures on here – three from section 1, then two from section 2 and three from section 3.
Please contact me if there is anything else that you want to know (please message me if you want postage costs outside the UK).

DETAILS OF SECTION 1
Ten of Colonel’s study (two marked OTP), one of Camrose study and hall, and five of Anastasia Academy (hence “You’ll Catch Your Death”), all coded 12
Four of a photo lab, coded 13
Four of Bristow’s apartment (one with OTP markings), hence “Game”, coded 14
Two of a hotel foyer, one more entitled “palace composite” and three others, coded 18
One of an outer office and one of a hotel lounge, coded 19
One of a pub interior (with a chap with an eyepatch in), coded 20
Two of a church belfry (with body underneath bell) and four of “int B.T.I.”, coded 21 (is that Linda Thorson, bottom right? see first photo)
One of Mother’s apartment (unfortunately marked with a red pen in places) and two of Minnow’s apartment (hence “The Interrogators”), coded 22
One of a crypt and two of Rehearsal Room no 1, coded 25
One of Kreer’s house (hence “Stay Tuned”), coded 26
Six of misty exteriors, two of which name the “Gaslight Ghoul Club” (hence “fog”)

Finally in this section, there are three of Steed’s lounge (with several of the production crew in), and one of Steed’s kitchen with Patrick Macnee in. These four are in not quite as excellent condition as most of the others, with one or two small creases and also punched holes on the left (they have clearly been in a folder at some stage). a couple also have OTP markings on.

I think that all these photos belong together to make an interesting archive; hence I am selling them all as one lot, and will not split them up. Good luck with your bidding.

I was the only bidder and got the lot for £15 (inc posting!)

I don't think the seller was directly involved, since even I can tell it isn't Linda Thorson in the shot referred too ( I've included it below ) and I don't think that anyone who had worked with her would have made that mistake.
A few have sections hatched out in wax pencil, perhaps showing where shots were to be cropped during shooting, so I think they were used during shooting as well as for reference afterwards.
Apart from that I don't know anything else about them I'm afraid...

Below I've posted another from the same set that was proving hard to identify from the last batch ( with the ship on the fireplace ), the one that is not Linda in my opinion, and a couple of others that I hope you'll find interesting!

It couldn't be Aitch's wife (Harry Fielder, famous supporting artist, whose wife Mary doubled for Linda Thorson in some episodes, I think 'Wish You Were Here' is one of them?). Aitch is on the web, but I wouldn't want to blatantly ask him because Mary died a few years ago and it would be a bit insensitive. There may well have been more doubles of Linda for second unit work, set-ups etc. And as is said above it could be simply a member of the crew, it's hard to tell 60s fashions from the costumes sometimes as they were so stylish!

someone outside told me that Mary doubled for Linda, many times over the span of the series..

Toni Gilpin, in The Rotters.
Oliver MacGreevey in Killer.
Terry Plummer, Nosher Powell and unknown in Take Me to Your Leader

Mary Fielder was only in Wish You Were Here so far as the records show.

Thanks for sharing these, Mastermind, they're wonderful.

This set has definitely never appeared on screen in an Avengers episode.

I wonder can it be from either Great Great Britain Case or Invitation to a Killing. Most Avengers sets got a repaint/redress in their life but this set doesn't feature any recognisable items.

All great pictures, and thanks for posting some background on them! Very Happy That definitely isn't Linda in the picture, though she does seem to be wearing Linda's tartan outfit from Have Guns, Will Haggle.

Thanks very much to everyone for helping to identify the names and episodes of the others - much as I love repeatedly watching The Avengers, I find it distracting to keep pausing them every time an interior is shown and leafing through all the photos over and over again on the off-chance that something will match up!

Here are some more shots of the 'mystery' set.
It would be great if it did turn out to be from one of the lost episodes, and I suppose it is feasible since there is already the photo of Steed from The Great Great Britain Case identified already.

The first of these has marks drawn on afterwards cropping the image down, presumably to match the camera shot. There is some writing in the same wax pencil above the left-hand doorway but I can't make out what it says.

I've already identified her - it's Toni Gilpin in a scene from "The Rotters".

That last batch didn't look visually very Avengers like.

I've just followed a hunch and they're actually sets from Gerry Anderson's live action show The Protectors starring Robert Vaughn and Nyree Dawn Porter (Who Sydney Newman wanted for Cathy Gale). It's Vaughn's character's apartment.

I was about to suggest they were from another show - it's clearly a standing set; it's very involved. To make a set that complex would require it to be expected to have a lot of use.

Wow! That is an amazing bit of intuitive detective work, I would never ever have worked that out - I've never even heard of The Protectors! [but I'm certainly going to look them out now!]

From that it may be possible to work out who took them if only a few people worked on both shows...

It also helps me to sort these photos out, because all of the ones that have been confirmed as Avengers have a four- or five-digit number on the back in pencil. None of the ones which look like parts of The Protectors set are numbered.

If that rule holds true then all of the following should be Avengers, the possible exception being the exterior shot since that only has a two-digit number on the back...
