I mailed Studio Canal in the UK about their plans to release The Avengers series on BD in 2014. Series 4 is scheduled for November 2014, also released in France in November. This was their reply:

We intend to release Series 4,5 and 6 on blu-ray.

Series 4 – 7 discs
Series 5 – 7 discs
Series 6 – 9 discs

That is our intention at the moment…

Hopefully the U.S. market will also release other seasons on blu Ray as well.
Looking forward to the set!!!

yes...hoping.....but i would not count on it. makes me sad..that this is constantly being screwed up.....and more --here in the states..

The entire series, of course, needs a release on Blu-ray. Remember this is how The Avengers was released on VHS and DVD; the Emma episodes were the priority.

I certainly hope 4, 5 and 6 are done right on Blu-ray on both sides of the Atlantic! And I agree that the whole series needs to be released on DVD again here in America, preferably with the new Optimum transfers, and not just the repackaged bad ones like A&E put out in their reissued Peel Megaset. But there wouldn't be much point to releasing the early seasons on Blu-ray. The format wouldn't do any favors to the seasons shot on video. High definition only makes sense for the filmed seasons, as film can be transferred at a much higher resolution than video.

too bad as the video season really needs help. Is there anything that could be done to improve the quality at this point?

The PAL DVD of the video tape series are MUCH better than the terrible, gloomy, US ones.... maybe they'll do a reprint with the improved content.
I have a solitary A&E series 3 DVD which I only every watched once (The Secrets Broker being the only episode viewed) because it was so terrible. Imagine my joy when I discovered the British DVDs were viewable and fun to watch!

Does anyone know why we still have regions for dvd and now bluray Question Why can't everything be region free Question Cd's have never had region codes. There are a few region 0 dvd's out there. I just think it would be better for everyone if all dvd's were region 0. Incidentally I've just bought a region 0 dvd, which I then noticed was NTSC for the USA market. I thought I wouldn't be able to watch it, but it does play on my region 2 player. Does this mean we don't have to worry about PAL or NTSC anymore, if the disc is region 0 Question Thanks, Rich.

It's the worst that there is still region coding.
I really would like the persuaders Blu Ray set but it is locked to the UK region. I'm in the United states. Same goes for the avengers Blu Ray sets when they come.

I do have a region free DVD player but region free on Blu ray is very difficult to get around. Mod players are pricy.

It sucks!!!

UK/European players and televisions can handle NTSC without problem. However, US equipment that can handle PAL is not as widespread.

I have preordered the set. I'll post my findings when I receive it.

the Blu-ray set is unfortunately NOT an upgrade. i just previewed a few episodes and the visuals were often washed out, odd contrast, and a few scenes looked nice, but in general the A&E DVD often looks better. now the bad news… the new Blu-ray suffers from speed-up, giving the actors a helium quality and making movements and pacing unnatural. steed and peel sound so unnatural, i'll be returning my set as defective.

Thanks for spreading the word, Jason. Hugely disappointing!

It's worth noting that the Optimum "helium voices" problem was corrected, so the UK releases are no longer affected in the way you say.

Many thanks, Jace.
Crying or Very sad Very sadly, as for first release The Avengers on Blue-ray, at all. Frankly, I didn't expected that there will be some upgrade to the day of release, looking back on the past releases of the series from A&E, but the fact that it looks worse even than last A&E DVD, due to three discs for 24 episodes, says that my confidence to the company A&E falls almost to zero.

The Optimum sets still "suffer" from PAL speed up though, don't they Alan? I'm not criticising them for that, they're a PAL release after all, but they're 25fps just like (apparently) this new Blu-ray.
