Just thought I would pass on my condolences at his passing... there is nothing in entertainment that wasn't automatically made better by Mr. Macnee being in it. And aside from the awesomeness of the Avengers, he was in some other great shows & movies, like the Howling, and a cool 2 parter on the original Battlestar Galactica, and about a billion other things.

Patrick:
Thank you so much for sending a card all the way to Aus when our daughter was born two decades ago. Thanks for thinking of our family and signing so many copies of books and photographs for us. Thanks for serving your country, and the cause of freedom, during the dark days of World War Two. Thanks for giving us such a role model of what a true gentleman, and a great actor, should be. Thanks for all the inspiration, and all those wonderful Avengers stories. "Long, happy memories".

IanBeard on Roobarb's said this, and he's not wrong, it's a nice gallery:

"The Mirror gave Patrick a whole page, and there's some nice images on it's website..."

This was front page news on a number of British newspapers and most of them have run tributes to Patrick.

Both the Daily Mirror and the Daily Express carried the news on their front pages for the Friday 26th June editions.

Just seen the very sad news - news I was dreading.
Patrick was an magnificent icon of British and international television, film and stage.
He made acting look so effortless and joyous.
No one could wear a bowler with such style as Patrick

What a sad year; our two Mr Avengers Brian Clemens and now Patrick have left the stage.

In addition to Police Surgeon, The Avengers and The New Avengers I remember Patrick in a wonderfully funny Python-esque US comedy series called Empire which I hope gets a DVD release and in one of the most ingenious TV film murder-mysteries I've seen - Rehearsal For Murder.

Thank you Patrick for making John Steed one of my lifelong heroes and for all the fabulously stylish thrilling entertainment.
God Bless you, Patrick a true English gentle-man.
RIP Patrick

I'm still very sad, but it feels good to see how many people share their love and respect for him. It's not only older people who grew up with the Avengers, but also a lot of younger people who definitely liked him very much.

BBC 4 posted a few rare photos of Patrick earlier career in the 40ths on Facebook

and a picture of "Morning Depature" on BBC 4 Twitter

Most actors turn their backs scornfully on the part that made them, like Connery with Bond. Patrick never did and was proud to have been John Steed. I've never watched a single episode and thought, 'he could have done that better'. He was perfect.

In 1998, I purchased the entire Peel/Tara series in DVD and spent several wonderful months watching, for the first time since the Avengers originally aired, the shows that meant so much to me when young. But back then I had discovered the Avengers only after most of the B&W Peel episodes had already aired and so many were new to me. However, I deliberately avoided watching every B&W episode. I set aside two that I'd never seen before with the intent of watching them only upon the passing of the two stars--Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg. In 1998, that day seemed comfortably far off in the future. Alas, it's finally arrived. Tonight, I'll watch one of the two remaining episodes with a full glass of scotch in hand. Thank you, Patrick. Rest in Peace.

Oh! Please share which 2 episodes

A Sense of History and A Room Without A View. Not the best but. . . they're all watchable. (I was following David K. Smith's rating system and saving the lowest rated eps for last.)

Pat did not feature in Police Surgeon, despite occasional assertions from ABC personnel (such as Howard Thomas) that he did!

Allard's made some nice banners as a tribute to Patrick, and the forum has been updated with one of them.

My memory was playing tricks on Police Surgeon - thanks for putting me right Alan. Here is Patrick surprising Ian Hendry on This Is Your Life in 1978.

I just wanted to add my condolences. I first saw the Avengers with the Channel 4 repeats of the 1980s and have followed it ever since.

He's given me some wonderful tv memories over the years. I'm sorry I never had the chance to meet him.

RIP Patrick...

It was thanks to Channel 4 that I got to see Avengers episodes for the first time.

Christopher Lee, Patrick and also Ron Moody at 91. It's been a pretty grim month in Avengerland.
