I was always saddened that Tara King never got to meet the Cybernauts. With an appearance in both the Peel series and in the New Avengers I think it would have rounded things off for them to have been pitted against Tara. It just feels like something is missing. Revenge of the Cybernauts - Ah if only Rolling Eyes

Yes, it's like Doctor Who companions who never saw a Dalek. I often wonder what a 1970-71 Tara King Avengers would have been like, with ever more way-out story lines and way-out clothes...It's a frustrating possibility that in one of the parallel multiverses such a series was made!

Many years ago Tony McKay and I went to interview Brian Clemens at his apartment in Kensington and one of the questions I asked was why there wasn’t a Cybernauts episode in the Thorson season. Brian’s reply stated this was because they had already done two and by that time the Cybernauts creator Philip Levene had departed the series and Clemens thought that he should be the one to provide the screenplay for any such adventure.

Several years later, Brian wrote The Last of the Cybernauts…?? for The New Avengers, because Philip had passed away by then. However, Clemens was quick to point out that had Levene still been alive that he would have been approached about providing screenplays for the revived version of the series.

The interview Tony and I did was written up and appeared in Time Screen number 19, of which the cover featuring Joanna Lumley as Purdey wearing a red dress and blue boots can be seen on another thread here on the forum.

Wow, that's interesting. It's a shame, I always felt like there was a part of the Cybernauts story missing with them not having appeared in the Thorson era.

They don't really lend themselves to variety in terms of storytelling.

That's nice that Clemens would have used Levene for the New Avengers - I got the impression that they had a falling out around the time of John Bryce.

I'm sure Joanna had those blue boots on when she appeared as a guest on This is Your Life, but I can't remember who was the Star Guest.

I know it wasn't Patrick.

This was something else that Brian mentioned during the interview. After Clemens’ contract was not renewed, he simply moved to the office opposite The Avengers production office, to work on The Champions with his close friend Dennis Spooner, which resulted in him scriptwriting the episodes Happening and Autokill. Meanwhile, Philip Levene had become the script editor on The Avengers and would telephone Brian to consult/ask his opinions regarding the current episode he was working on. After a while, Clemens pointed out to Levene that he should be consulting and getting advice regarding the scripts from the show’s current producer John Bryce. In Clemens own words, it appears that Levene resented this, but shortly after it seems that along with John Bryce, he was dismissed from the series.

Clemens also talked about Levene as a writer on The Avengers and rated him highly as an ideas man who came up with excellent storylines.
