Again, the original sign must have been painted free hand because the G's, and especially the N's are both very different on the screen prop.

Some years ago at The Avengers at 50 event at Chichester University

I bitterly regret not attending that event, and to think it was only 20 minutes drive from my home. But sadly it was at a very difficult time in my life, and my love for the Avengers had, at that point, become non existent. There seems to be very little in terms of a photographic record of it on line. I believe I was told that somebody made a Winged Avenger costume for it Smile but there doesn't seem to be any images of that around either, such a pity, I'd love to have seen it.

Right, well that's a nice prop too. I'm waiting to see how you get on with the anti-gravity boots!

Those will be a bit tricky, I may have to have a go at making those completely from scratch, so I wouldn't hold your breath lol
But at least I've already made the boots remote control, which was a fiddly job.

'Somone made a Winged Avenger outfit'... yes, that someone was Elspeth Thomson, another friend of mine and a regular attendee of the Dead Man's Treasure Hunt. We stayed in the halls of residence at Chichester University and I was in the kitchen part when Annette Hill called me, 'Mike, you really need to come and see this!' I went into the corridor and we looked out of the window down into the university grounds and there was The Winged Avenger. We instantly knew who it was because Elspeth's friends B Jones and Duncan (I forget his surname) were also there. That evening there was a fancy dress competition in one of the student bars there and I went along (though not in fancy dress).

The event was only ever going to be a one-off, with a line-up of guests that can never be repeated. On the strength of the event I was finally influenced to write the book Bowler Hats and Kinky Boots, which I had been threatening to do for nine months, that was proof read by Annette. I feel I did it at the right time, because so many people associated with the series have since passed away and I'm really happy that I got to talk to them/exchange emails before it was too late.

Duncan Lilly, Mike Smile

I have got a picture of Elspeth in costume with Paul O'Grady next to her on an old laptop but I won't be able to access it for some time.

I regret little in life but I do regret missing that, sounds like it was awesome.
Are there any pictures of the WA costume ? I love it when someone goes to such efforts. 'Bowler Hats and Kinky Boots', no idea why I haven't bought that book already, I must look into ordering it this afternoon.

Just remembered I sent it via email to Elspeth so have managed to find it that way. Not a great quality pic but camera phones weren't that great in 2011:

Hi Geoff

Yes, Duncan Lilly of course and you were obviously there too to take the photograph, which isn't too bad at all.

Ian

Thanks, I think you'll enjoy it.

I wasn't working at the time and I can remember Stephen James Walker of Telos Publishing and I working endlessly on this book, sometimes I would spend 10 hours a day simply proof reading it and managed to give myself two migraine attacks within the space of three weeks because I was spending so long behind a computer.

Besides Annette Hill, many others helped, but considerable asistance came from Alan Hayes, Andrew Pixley and Tony McKay.

Next up .... The claws, I think I've finally come up with a way to make them in fibreglass.

Ian

This looks the business now. All the hard working in painting the lettering by hand appears to have paid off.

Thanks Mike. very kind Very Happy I painted it all by hand with the exception of 'ENTERPRISES'. I think I'm actually going to hang this one in the front porch.

Making the claws was always a bug to me because I dreaded the thought of having to make eight 'fingers' (I get bored quickly doing repetitive stuff). However I thought of a way to create them really quickly in fibreglass. I've just knocked this rough test one up in literally 10 minutes - cool, about an hour and I'll have em all done Wink

I'm wondering how hard it would be to make this ....

.... a lot tougher than it looks I'm thinking, Plasticine would be out of the question, it wouldn't last 5 minutes, and trying to gouge scratches like that out of something solid isn't simple. And the lettering would have go on first so one mistake with the scratching and it's screwed !

I really have no idea Mike. Clay painted blue and then torn open like that would reveal the clays natural colour underneath surely Confused I think you were right the first time, it's a form of blue Plasticine (I would never have thought of that), rolled out, the lettering painted on and then gouged with a sharp instrument. And the scratches aren't cleverly painted on because they are casting shadows. Very hard to replicate (maybe impossible) in a more sturdy form. The more solid version seen in Epic doesn't really interest or inspire me. Maybe studying the scene where it's scratched will reveal something Wink
