Enjoying my new found enthusiasm for The Avengers and currently watch True Entertainment with as much enthusiasm as when I watched the show in the 60`s.

Watched with interest an episode of "One Foot in the Past" seemingly broadcast in 1997 and posted on Youtube, in which Patrick MacNee talks with much enthusiasm about an idyllic village on the south coast of the UK called Bosham. He appears to say that he was there on and off for a period of 12 years while filming The Avengers and even talks to the lady who owned the cottage where he stayed.

It seems most likely Bosham was a weekend and holiday retreat as I have seen nothing and heard nothing to suggest The Avengers was filmed on the south coast.

Can anyone throw any light on Patrick`s connection with Bosham. I would be interested to hear.

I remember the documentary when it was on TV, many moons ago though. Didn't Patrick say that he'd like Bosham to have been his final resting place ? It's about 20 minutes drive from where I live, a lovely little place indeed.

He did indeed, but I suppose his wish wasn't fulfilled? It really looks charming, I'd love to visit it one day.

I recorded it on VHS when it was first shown, in fact I think the YouTube uploads may well have come from my tape. I also live a short drive from Bosham and my wife and I visit once or twice a year.

Much too far from Elstree to have been used as an Avengers location but it does appear in an episode of Poirot ("The Adventure of the Italian Nobleman") and Anneka Rice dropped in once on Treasure Hunt.

It's a hugely historic village and well worth a visit. The Anchor Bleu pub does very good food. Just be careful where you park, the road around the harbour floods at high tide!

Patrick Macnee enjoyed returning to it during the filming of The New Avengers, which must have been a surreal period for him.

In a visit to England, where I toured both Avengers and Sherlock Holmes vistas, I did go to Bosham. It is a very pretty little walkable town. Old church with old cemetery. Really quite lovely.

i was near there last summer when i was staying in Chichester. I asked Patrick's son about Pat's connection to the place. Rupert said, "In 1972/73 he was doing "Sleuth" at The Music Box in New York. On his day off he would head out to Montauk and walk on the beach there. When he was working at Chichester 1975/6 (?) he used to love walking on the beach at West Wittering...it reminded him of Montauk. And vice versa."

Does anyone know exactly where the house Patrick Macnee stayed in is situated?

I've walked around Bosham many times, most recently yesterday, but I've never spotted it. Today I watched One Foot in the Past again and I realised from the comments that it most probably isn't in Bosham itself but somewhere close by. Based on Jace's comment above about West Wittering beach, I'm thinking it may well be around the Itchenor / Birdham / Wittering area. The thatched cottages are quite distinctive but I haven't turned them up on Google Earth.

Has anyone ever managed to track it down?

I'll be in Bosham this summer. I'll ask his family if they know where the house is.

Thanks Jace, it would be interesting to know where it is.

Incidentally the spot on the South Downs where Patrick starts the programme is "Seven Points" on Trundle Hill at Goodwood.

As he says, it has the best views over Chichester and the harbour beyond, but you'd need some very powerful binoculars to make out the houses from there!

I've found it! Or to be more precise my friends on the Flashback - Chichester Facebook group very quickly identified it.

As I had come to realise it isn't in Bosham at all but 8 miles to the east, in Runcton Lane in the village of Runcton.

Patrick's autobiography Blind In One Ear doesn't mention this cottage. He does however talk about "Dove Cottage" where he stayed in 1975 while appearing at the Chichester Festival Theatre. This is about half a mile away from the house above, at "Pigeon House Farm" in Church Road.

I hope you enjoy your visit Jace.

Patrick's book is fascinating, he mentions many of the places - Harting, Chilgrove, Funtington - in the area I have lived in all of my life.

I left school and started my first job in Chichester in 1975, the same year that Patrick was appearing at the Festival Theatre. The office where I was working arranged a Treasure Hunt one summer's evening which I took part in. One of the villages we passed through was Runcton ... if only I'd known then!

Cool to hear about your time there. I'll try to make some new photographs of the area for Spy Vibe.

Photobucket have scuppered all of my online pictures. Here is the last one I posted, Pat's former lodging place in Runcton, courtesy of ThumbSnap:
