The current rights holders are Studio Canal / Canal +, aren't they? - but I would love a digital download or fast-tracked release, otherwise I'll wait years for it, like Hot Snow and Girl on the Trapeze

I should have said license holder, I guess. Like A&E or Optimum. The ones who secure the rights to actually release product.

StudioCanal release the product in most territories themselves. The USA is an exception, as is Australia.

Other than that, Optimum no longer exist and, like Kinowelt in Germany, have been subsumed into StudioCanal.

I'd love to know the background to how this episode was found by Kaleidoscope or came to their attention.

I agree, Franky! It seems an obvious area of enquiry as it might lead to more discoveries. I suspect there's a need to tread lightly and not jeopardise future recoveries, if it's come from a private collector.

This.

Kaleidoscope know their stuff and will have made enquiries that might lead to further recoveries (and I'm thinking of recoveries wider than just The Avengers here).

The print did come from a private collector and it is not uncommon for the person concerned to stipulate that he or she remains anonymous. I suspect this is the case here, but rest assured all the appropriate questions will have been asked.

A while back, I posted a link that many missing TV shows had been discovered and that with everything crossed, we might be lucky enough to discover a season 1 episode. I was slapped down for such ridiculous optimism at the time. And yet..... now who was right to be hopeful?

Fantastic news! I'd always hoped the rumours Tunnel of Fear existed as an off air audio record were true - and that some day we might get to hear it - but had long given up hope of any further actual episodes being discovered.

By an weird coincidence, I only listened to Big Finish's audio version of this episode last Sunday. It will be fascinating to compare it to the DVDreconstruction and audiobook when it's finally released.

The 2010's have been a very good decade for discovering more about the first season of The Avengers! Very Happy

Nothing has yet been announced, but I hope it will be available. DVD sales and releases seem to be in terminal decline as everything moves online, but I think the audience most interested in this episode would be more likely to prefer it on DVD. Perhaps they can vidfire and remaster the other Hendry material and release them all on a single disc. That would be my preference.

I'm sure that a DVD release will be under consideration at StudioCanal, but these things take time. Besides anything else, clearances will have to be sought before anything can be announced, so I'd be surprised if we heard anything concrete for a month or two at the earliest.

I am so exited about the discovery of the lost episode!
Great stuff!
I am currently watching the 50th anniversary DVD set as well.
I did take a break to watch some Roger Moore in the Saint in honor of his birthday.

Anyway fantastic news and I hope that can buy it soon!!!

Tunnel of Fear is also being shown at the BFI's "Missing Believed Wiped" on Sunday 4th December. Tickets go on sale (to non-BFI members) on 8th November.

There was an item about TV recovery on last night's edition of Newsnight, including a brief clip of Tunnel of Fear.

Available on iPlayer (though probably only in the UK)

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b081wr2v

It's the final item.

The collector from whom it was recovered seemed to have a huge stash of material. He didn't even know he had this, he'd never watched it.
