I though it would be interesting to build a replica of Benstead's treasure chest from 'Dead Man's Treasure' as I don't get to work with wood very often. I was also interested to see if I could make pine look like cast iron, I actually started and completed this project several weeks ago Very Happy

Something I very rarely do, but shortly after I started to make the first chest I began to build a second one ...

Ian

The finish on the black painted wood does indeed look to have the texture of metal... a great trick using the hair dryer to achieve this.

Going to have a bash at these this week for the garden. I'm going to try and make the 'Swingingdale 2' sign so it changes direction in the wind Laughing

Looking at this sign I take it that it's just short of three standard building bricks in length by just over three in height.

Tackling this rally sign today. Looking at it closely it's obviously hand painted as there are minor deviations in the individual letters, for instance the O in 'invitation' is more oval than the O in 'only' and the Y in 'rally' is spaced a little too far away from the preceding letters. The A in invitation is also slightly too large Wink I really wanted to try and create it from acrylic though, which my prove a bit tricky Confused

By the brickwork it's attached too I estimate the sign to be just shy of three standard building bricks long and almost three and a half bricks deep which by my reckoning makes it roughly 25" x 10.5", and quite thin.

Even though I'm making it from acrylic I still want it have the hand painted slightly organic look that the original has.

Let the fun and games begin Wink

Finished : Binstead's annual rally sign, built in perspex but made to appear slightly organic by giving it a hand painted look Wink

It would be cool to take a photo of this hanging on the brick pillar where, 50 years ago, the original once hung. I'd drive there to do it as It's less than 90 minutes from my home, but I understand the location is now completely overgrown Sad

Ian

When I first went to the gateway of Shenley Hall in 1987 it was still in use and only became disused some years later when a large company bought the premises. The gates were locked and have remained that was ever since, but your impressive sign would still be able to be mounted on the stone gatepost there. A new gateway was created and together with a new driveway, they provided a wider entrance to Shenley Hall, where most of the Dead Man's Treasure recreations start/have started from.

Thank's Mike, that's interesting. In that case one sunny weekend over this summer I'll take a drive up there with the sign and grab a photo Wink
