Other sad news. Maria Andipa, actress and ambassador of the Greek community in London, has died 12th April in Cromwell Hospital.

She played the singer named Conchita in the Avengers episode Death Dispatch (1962).

Ms Andipa was born in Ierosolyma (Jerusalem) to Greek parents and at an early age studied Byzantine ecclesiastical art. She moved to London and enjoyed a brief movie career, appearing in The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll (also as a gypsy), then television episodes of Maigret, The Avengers and Redcap. In 1967 she set up her own art gallery and upon her death was the Executive Director of the prestigious Andipa Gallery of modern and contemporary art in Knightsbridge, London.
Several years ago a dear friend and I had the opportunity to be hosted by Ms Andipa for coffee at her gallery. She showed us the works of Matisse, Miro, Picasso, Moore, Chagall, Warhol and many others. Afterward she regaled us with stories about the cold, nighttime filming of the gypsy camp and girl fight at Pinewood Studios. She remembered Pedro Armendariz very affectionately, though he was suffering badly from cancer at the time, and the time they shared together discussing his 1948 film The Pearl.
Maria Andipa was a fascinating, charming and influential woman. In addition to her work as an actress, singer, guitarist and dancer, she was fluent in seven languages. She had bountiful energy and regularly hosted fundraisers, charities benefiting education, orphanages and food programs and sponsored Greek artists living in Britain. Of the Greeks she said, “We are all brothers and sisters, no matter where we are, we never stop caring for our country.”

sorry to hear about her passing...sadly, as the years continue to roll by, the olde saying..' nobody gets out of this world alive' rings loud and clear.

god speed and R.I.P.
