I'm with Franky, that's Anthony Bate. Paddy is a crusty old guy.

There's no way this bald old man, lying on the ground, could look like Anthony.

This is the only shot I could find that didn't 100% look like Anthony. However, the driving scenes straight after are with Bate & Cope.
33:01 Earle and Gardiner depart the house with an artwork, seen by Janice and Steed

I would definitely not be so sure that the man, lying on the ground, is Anthony Bate, as they could easily use a stand-in and shoot him from such an angle to create the desired impression. For example, for years, many thought that John Tyler in the episode The Fear Merchants was Patrick Macnee, and not Oliver Tomlin, even the man's face was fully visible in the frame.

The opposite case, it seems to this day it is still accepted that the man in the bowler hat and umbrella in the hospital (The Fear Merchants, again) is Rocky Taylor, although I see no way to give such a clear identification by the back of the head. I wonder if Rocky himself said anything about this character.

I can see the way.
1) Piers, you yourself mentioned that the shooting angle can give some illusions, which we really encountered on several occasions.
2) They could use a glue wig for Paddy, even though it would be logical to just use someone with hair. Yes, a production crew is replete with mysteries including the management of savings.

Lots of questions for the Avengers production, for example:

Why dye Ian Ogilvy's hair for his role as Baron in They Keep Killing Steed if it would be easier to use a blonde actor?

Why use tall Terry Richards as a stunt double for mid-size actors?

Why use half-bald Paddy Ryan as a stunt double for actors with hair?

These above are facts. Where is the logic?

Why shoot some scenes with doubles up close so you can see their faces?

etc...

Well, with our reflections, I come to the conclusion that Paddy Ryan is not in the episode The Curious Case of the Countless Clues at all. Wink

I have no idea who the stand-in is in the screenshot below.

Split!

Go to the Book by Mike Richardson (page 641).

Rocky Taylor (Stunt Double for John Steed) Yes
Terry Plummer (Stunt Double for Hinnell) ?
Fred Haggerty (Stunt Double for Dr. Constantine) Yes
Leslie Crawford (Stunt Double for Hinnell) Yes
Cyd Child (Stunt Double for Tara King) ?
Leslie Soden (Pianist Double for Lord Barnes) No
Cliff Diggins (Stunt Double for John Steed) Yes
Bob Anderson (Stunt Double for Lord Barnes) Looks like

1. Rocky Taylor was Patrick's stunt double against John G. Heller (Hinnell) and Bernard Archard (Doctor), while Cliff Diggins was Patrick's stunt double when Nigel Davenport (Lord Barnes) attacked him. It's great to see Cliff as Patrick's stunt double again, which brings us back to the black and white Emma Peel episodes "Man-Eater of Surrey Green" and "Silent Dust".

2. There is only one footage where Terry Plummer could replace John G. Heller (in the fight with Steed), but it is most likely that Les Crawford or John himself was there, since the actors are in close-up and Patrick's face is visible. Most likely Terry Plummer's participation was either not required at all or footage (s) with him was not included in the final editing.

3. If Cyd Child was in the episode, then as a driving double.

4. There is no pianist double.

Driving Double for Patrick Macnee is NOT John Clifford. Maybe John Clifford didn't fit or left for another project and they started looking for a replacement?

It's nice to see Rocky Taylor again, which will appear in a couple of other Tara episodes too.

Paul Weston definitely did the stunt where Steed jumps out of the window at the conference in They Keep Killing Steed (Iíve got a photograph of him from when we took him back to the location a couple of years ago where he talked us through it) and also did the fight in the villainsí underground base.

Many Thanks, Mariocki. Agree, even following the official documents in Mike's book it becomes known that Paul Weston performed most of the stunts for Patrick Macnee in the episode They Keep Killing Steed, including this stunt where Steed jumps out of the window at the conference. Wink Changed "Maybe" to "difficult to identify".
In the final fight, in some frames, Paul Weston and Cliff Diggins (Cliff is larger) are clearly visible.

I also want to compliment the good decision to select George Leech as stunt double for Norman Jones. George really looks a lot like him. Smile

I think Iíve posted this up before but it wonít hurt to have it in this thread - hereís Paul on his return to the location of the jump he performed in They Keep Killing Steed.

As you can see, itís not as high as it looks on screen thanks to some clever positioning of the camera.

I believe George Leech was a stunt double in OHMSS, the 6th Bond film in 1969..

always found it both amusing and interesting that you could clearly tell the stone doubles, rather than think it was Patrick, etc...poor editing.

Wow, great. I think that besides the camera angle, Paul's jump also makes feel it's higher than in reality. He makes a big swing, well done. This is one of my favorite moments in the episode. Wink

George has been in a lot of 007 movies, but surprisingly he wasn't used a lot in The Avengers as he is a real professional. I've always loved George's work. Wink

In fact, it would be good if Vic Armstrong was also used in The Avengers as a stunt double, but this did not happen, his only screen involvement associated with the Steed epic were these screen tests for The New Avengers.

And here are my ten favorite stunt performers from The Avengers: Smile

1. Cliff Diggins
2. Ray Austin
3. George Leech
4. Mike Stevens
5. Rocky Taylor
6. Cyd Child
7. Paul Weston
8. Joe Dunne
9. Dorothy Ford
10. Les White

Wish You Were Here

Go to the Book by Mike Richardson (page 671).

Cyd Child (Stunt Double for Tara King) Looks like
Arthur Howell (Stunt Double for Maxwell) Maybe, but one footage has Alf Joint as a stunt double for Maxwell
Cliff Diggins (Stunt Double for Parker) Looks like
Billy Dean (Stunt Double for Vickers) Difficult to identify
Dorothy Ford (Stunt Double for Miss Craven) Maybe
Joe Dunne (Stunt Double for Porter A) Yes
Paddy Ryan (Stunt Double for Charles Merrydale) Impossible to identify

Looks like Martin Lyder is the driving double for Patrick Macnee (he played a waiter in this episode).

Don Chaffey does a good job of hiding the faces of the stunt doubles.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Killer

Go to the Book by Mike Richardson (page 673).

Cliff Diggins (Stunt Double for Trancer) Maybe, Impossible to identify
Paul Weston (Stunt Double for John Steed) Yes
Alf Joint (Stunt Double for Paxton) Yes
Alf Joint (Stunt Double for Lawson) Difficult to identify
Joe Dunne (Stunt Double for Trancer) Maybe, Impossible to identify
Alf Joint (Stunt Double for Brinstead) Yes
Les White (Stunt Double for Merridon) Difficult to identify
Paul Weston (Stunt Double for Trancer) Maybe, Impossible to identify
Cyd Child (Stunt Double for Lady Diana Forbes-Blakeney) Impossible to identify
Joe Dunne (Stunt Double for Ralph Bleech) No. There are no scenes where a stunt double for John Bailey is needed.

I think in addition to the fact that Joe Dunne as a stunt double for John Bailey was not used in the episode, it also did not use one of the three mentioned stunt doubles in the book for Michael McStay.
Paul Weston was probably a stunt double for Michael on the outside, while Cliff Diggins or Joe Dunne was in the fight.
