Actress Jo Kendall who played in TNA episode To Catch a Rat has died.

Tribute from Barnaby Eaton-Jones on Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/BarnabyEJ/posts/10159689927651203

My dear Jojo has exited the stage. It's been really tough to work out what to write but she left this life in the way she lived it - on her own terms. She'd decided enough was enough, and that was that.
For those that don't know her, she was the consummate comedian and actress who genuinely broke barriers in the 1960's and, because she was a no-nonsense female who could stand up for herself, inevitably she was often described as 'formidable'. You see, intelligence and wit can scare men.
She was best known for the BBC Radio series I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again but she also did the first series of I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue as well. She appeared in the West End, she appeared on television, and she continued to appear on radio, but she'd long since retired when I tried to persuade her to tread the boards again.
When I revived I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again on stage, Jojo was the one person who people said I wouldn't entice back to cameo. Yes, even above John Otto Cleese. But, after a few conversations, she appeared to like the cut of my jib and, though already struggling with her health, she joined us at the start and at the end of our first tour.
She came alive on stage and she'd often say afterwards what a joy it had been to step back out into the limelight again (once with Graeme Garden and once with Tim Brooke-Taylor, by her side). I was lucky enough to perform the famous 'John and Mary' sketches with her, which she'd sometimes have written herself, and which she originally performed with John Cleese. It was a joy to get that look of sternness from her as Mary (see below photo) as her new John said something as equally silly as her old John.
I kept in touch with her afterwards, and we talked of her life and her research and her education and her desire to have been allowed to do more as a woman in the arts. She'd wanted to write her autobiography with me, and I never pushed her into starting. I wish I had now. It was just too much fun on the phone, listening to her reminisce; whilst she often was chastising her faithful companion, Teddy, who would sit on her lap and lick her face. He was her little pet dog, in case you were wondering! Ahem.
Sadly, she had a severe stroke a few years back, and we spoke less. Not because we'd decided not to, mainly because she would get tired during conversations and invariably they couldn't last as long. I never wanted her to feel I was pestering.
I didn't know she'd left her home to spend her final days in Denville Hall until Graeme Garden dropped me an email, and I managed to get back in touch via her good friends who were kind enough to pass on messages from me.
It had been her decision to 'fade away'. She'd arranged for Teddy to be taken care of, and just began refusing sustenance - ready to make her final exit the way she wanted to.
I sent her a huge bunch of red roses, on behalf of all of us in I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again - Again, with the simple inscription 'Dear Jojo. You always shone. xx'
And she did. And I miss her already.

Among many other achievements, she was in the first episode of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and spoke the first line in Emmerdale Farm. That's pretty iconic stuff.

Rest in Peace.

Franky, thanks. Sadly I don't know much about Jo Kendall's career, but it's great to see so many comments about her on different websites.

One thing that is curious is Jo's real age, name and date of birth. While on Internet mention that she was 83 years old and her real name is Josephine May Kendall, I suspect that this is a mistake. My research leads to the point that Jo was actually 81 years old. Real name is Josephine Robinson, born February 17, 1940. Recently I changed the Wiki for this information, but it was reverted (I didn't change it again in order to avoid being banned). Hope, if there will be an Obituary in The Times newspaper, the staff of this newspaper is doing an excellent job. Wink

My other info for the wiki was as follows (now it has been deleted by someone):

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jo_Kendall&oldid=1068806171

Kendall was born on 17 February 1940. After leaving Leicester she trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and gained her Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music (LRAM).

Career

While teaching English and drama at a State secondary school for girls at Cambridge, she acted with the University's Dramatic Societies' productions with roles ranging from Desdemona in Othello at the ADC Theatre, Cambridge, in 1962,[1] to Maisie King in Expresso Bongo. She also trained as a studio manager with the BBC.

Now on Wiki is incorrect information:

In 1958, Kendall married Frederick J. Bowd, a local farmer, at Holbeach St Marks, Lincolnshire.[6]

I checked, this refers to Jo who was a clerk.

Here on Wiki:

Kendall was born on 17 February 1938,[1] to Walter G. Kendall and wife Doreen (née Ashton) in Spalding, Lincolnshire.[2][3]

This is highly misleading. I hope we will get some real official material very soon.

I don't see why she couldn't have been a 20 year old typist who married a local farmer in 1958 and then went on to a career in comedy and acting after going to Cambridge and being in the Footlights.

Yes, she could well have been a clerk in 1958, given that she had just went from Collegiate School then (it is mentioned in the press that she attended a Collegiate School from 1954 to 1958), but Jo who married the farmer is mentioned in the official entry as a spinster Josephine May Kendall (father's name is Kendall)...

https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/581808b0e93790eb7f13a60f?locale=en&search_id=5c9891394325a658b72a7f35&ucf=false

...while our Jo was studying in Collegiate School under the name Josephine Robinson. It was after she became as Jo Kendall. Wink

P.S./ "I checked, this refers to Jo who was a clerk" was pointed in one of the posts above as what I already knew was a different person on the mentioned official entry, so if our Jo was also a clerk that year - 1958 - that would be an interesting coincidence. Wink

According to the register of electors, Josephine M Bowd lives in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire.

Barnaby Eaton-Jones, who knew Jo well and worked on her (uncompleted) autobiography, finished his Facebook posting with the line:
"JO KENDALL: 17th February 1940 - 29th January 2022. RIP".

It will at least show us which of tomorrow's newspapers use Wikipedia for their obituaries.

Well said Nick, I'm sure soon some points about Jo will be on the right track. Smile

John Cleese have many happy memories of Jo:

...she was a very likeable, cheerful, friendly woman - a delight to work with...

Video tribute (including newspaper article mentioning the name Josephine Robinson): Wink

Ian, many thanks for. It is curious that our Josephine also has a middle letter M in her full name like Josephine May Kendall. Wink

Hopefully, in the coming days there will be enough sources for correct information about Jo for the Wiki administration to rethink their views.

Just to be clear, it isn't "Wikipedia Admin" who reverted your changes Denis but another user. He removed them on the basis that there was no supporting citation. That user - C.J.Greengrass - has now posted on the article talk page that he accepts your information, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Jo_Kendall

You should be free to reenter it now but you should add a citation to avoid it being removed again. I guess the information came from the same article posted on the talk page: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FKSdVm-XMAAUBCs?format=jpg&name=medium

Edit: I've taken out the spurious info and added back some of your original. Hopefully, it can be completed more fully in days to come.

Cheers, Ian, thanks for everything you've done. Smile It's good to know that I was wrong as for mentioning about the Wiki administration, as things could get more complicated in that case.

I returned the information to Jo Kendall page on Wiki that I posted earlier by attaching part of it to your link. Wink

Overall, the Wiki article looks a lot nicer now with a cute photo added. Razz

I expect they will remove the photo, they always seem to do so unless it's one a user has taken themselves! Which has led to many unflattering and un-representative photos on many articles.

She's cute in these, too. With the Goodies (Graeme Garden, Bill Oddie, Tim Brooke-Taylor), John Cleese and David Hatch.

Exactly, I have the same suspicion that the photo attached by Andrew Davidson to Wiki page about Jo maybe deleted from.

Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

In this case it's good that we can use the editorial Wiki archive and see it again. For example, on this point (like Wayback Machine):

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jo_Kendall&oldid=1069212026

At the moment the picture is still on wkipedia here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Jo_Kendall.png, it's just that the article no longer includes it. If Andrew Davidson is able to add an acceptable "non-free use rationale" then the image can be relinked. I think most of us here know that's unlikely to happen, Wikipedia is very strict on what constitutes free use, in which case eventually the image will be deleted.

Regarding my earlier comment about which newspapers use Wikipedia, I see that the Spalding Guardian & Lincolnshire Free Press have published the story today about their "local" girl, including a paragraph about her 1958 marriage to a farmer. I wonder if the actual Mrs Bowd reads the newspaper.

Myself, I like seeing photos like this..and it's a piece of history, especially for those in the States..who weren't really aware of such actors, etc

I'm hoping the WIKI (etc) doesn't remove 'em from the article/thread
