In the mid-Sixties, The Avengers proved itself to be a cultural phenomenon. Despite its quintessential Englishness, it transcended international barriers, and established itself as British television’s most successful export of the day.
Today, it remains hugely popular, perhaps because of the schizophrenic nature of the show as it developed; it was a series of many colours, with something for everyone. But the earliest episodes of the show have, since their 1961 broadcast, disappeared from view, the vast majority of the recordings lost forever.
The Strange Case of the Missing Episodes lifts the lid on that first year, and retells the stories in extended synopsis form, covering twenty-four episodes, often with script extracts, in greater depth than ever before. The book also boasts a detailed introduction, which explores how these much sought after programmes came to be lost, and a detailed retelling of an alternative, untransmitted version of the episode Double Danger.
This title is available in four editions:
• Deluxe Hardcover with Dust Jacket
• Perfect Bound Paperback
• EPUB eBook
• PDF eBook

How fabulous, Alan! I've really enjoyed reading your work on season one on your site, so I'm sure I'll enjoy this, too. Season one has been neglected for so long, it's nice to see it get some attention. I'll be picking up a copy. _________________ Last Watched: Who Was That Man I Saw You With?

I'm sure I shall. I sprang for the hardcover. Between this and the Hendry bio, my book pile is growing again. _________________ Last Watched: Who Was That Man I Saw You With?

Someone needs to compile an Avengers bibliography. Or open an Avengers library. _________________ Last watched: The Man in the Mirror. |

Well, the next one is also about Series 1. After that, it's on with the rest of the series, a book at a time. _________________ Alan

Something for a new topic, really. Perhaps you might like to start a new one on this subject?
In the meantime, I will send you something nice to listen to. _________________ Alan

Well that was fast. Just got my package from Lulu. All the series 1 Missing Episodes. Well done Alan and Alys! And what a wonderful dedication to the "forgotten Avenger, remembered".
So I have to inquire Alan if you and Alys have some favorite episodes from series 1.
It's a beautiful book by the way. Very professionally done! _________________ "He likes his tea stirred anti-clockwise." |

Hi M,
Glad it arrived in good time and that you're happy with the book.
Can't speak for Alys (who I know is more an Emma Peel/Tara King fan), but my favourite episodes, based on what we know are Toy Trap and The Radioactive Man. The Far Distant Dead also sounds fascinating (as do many of them, to be honest).
Of course, Girl on the Trapeze (which as a surviving episode is not covered in depth in the book) is one of my favourite Avengers episodes of all. Well into my Top 10.
Please post your reactions as you read the stories.
Best wishes,
Alan _________________ Alan
