According to Patrick Macnee pirated video tapes with Avengers episodes where widely available in the eighties.
Does anyone know anything about these, owned one or know if they had covers? What the picture and sound quality was?
(Just to make myself clear I am not approving pirate releases, but I am just interested in these almost ancient illegal releases that helped getting official Avengers videos on the market.)

Could they have had something to do with the copies used as some in-flight movies. Someone might have got hold of the films and copied them. |

Thanks for the info and images, I had seen these covers before, but would not have guest them to be bootlegs. |

At the time, grabbing the second to the last video was the only way to see "Death of a Great Dane", and was the only Blackman episode released in the US. |

It was also doing the rounds in British trading circles thanks to a bad NTSC to PAL transfer (although it may just have been video-cammed from the US copy onto a PAL camera as this was a quick and cheap method to grab NTSC material). _________________ My Avengers sites:

I had quite a few of those. They rarely, if ever, had photos on the cover that matched the episode. Quality wasn't good, either, but it was the only product out there to buy until the A & E sets arrived. |

gosh, yer right...how funny and tacky....man, some of those covers
were low budget-all-the-way...and some of the 'prints' on vhs, looked
like they were wiped down with sand paper...(LOL)
but at the time, it was pretty much the other way to see episodes
over and over.... |

Despite the poor quality, the contents of some of the American pirated video cassettes are quite interesting.
For example, episode The House That Jack Built released by Bizarre Video Productions in 1981, includes two card titles "The Avengers - Commercial Break" (like Avengers episodes shot on videotape), each lasting 20 seconds.
And the early release of the episode "Dial a Deadly Number" includes intro "Avengers on Chess board".
etc... _________________ Denis |
