Hello, Moderators,
Can you please tell me if it is possible to insert a photo in the boxes? If so, how is that done?

Are we allowed to do that?
Rule 8 states that "Images posted by members should be hosted either on the member's personal webspace or at an image-hosting facility such as Photobucket. We recommend this to discourage bandwidth theft." _________________

Well these rules are not mutually exclusive, it doesn't say you can use any URL. |

I don't understand what you mean. I was under the impression we were encouraged to use photobucket to host images and not use the Img button. _________________

The [img] tag has nothing to do with hosting. By using the tags you aren't transferring the image to the forum to be hosted, or neccessarily stealing bandwidth. It's no different than using html to show an image. The rule is meant to deter people from stealing bandwidth alone, not to keep them from posting images to the forum. So if I want to post an image off TAF, for example, using the [img] tags around the original TAF URL for the image in order to post the image constitutes bandwidth theft. But if I save the image, upload it to my photobucket account, and then use the photobucket URL in the [img] tags, I'm not stealing anyone's bandwidth and I can post the image without problems. So the [img] tags themselves are not problematic at all--I use them all the time on both this and the Lumley forum. They don't make the forum bear the burden of hosting the image. It's the URL that goes between the tags that is subject to forum rules, since bandwidth theft is bad netiquette. Does that clear things up? _________________ Last Watched: Who Was That Man I Saw You With?

Great. I'll use the Img buttons in future, it's faster than photobucket. _________________

What would be the best solution is to host the image you want to use on your own Photobucket (or on another site) and post that version on the forum here. There is nothing wrong with putting up a picture but using the version on someone's website could use up there bandwidth.
And thank you Timeless for your post.

Exactly. Again, the[img] tags don't help with hosting at all--they just provide an easy way to post an image to the forum instead of just throwing a link up for people to click on. But you should always upload the image to photobucket or an equivalent. You're costing someone's site bandwidth and money otherwise.
I don't mind posting about this sort of thing at all, as you can see. I only hope I'm helping. _________________ Last Watched: Who Was That Man I Saw You With?

Perhaps I ought to apply for a job in tech support? _________________ Last Watched: Who Was That Man I Saw You With?

Thanks, Timeless. Much clearer. I'll stick to photobucket, unless I'm in a mad rush. _________________

If you can say, "Have you tried turning it off and then on again?", in a helpful voice, then yes, you could go in to tech support. _________________ Every parent has a favorite child. Usually the child belongs to the neighbors. |

And if that doesn't work, just give it a whack. Worked with the satellite receiver box last week. So nice to know that Bachelor's degree was worth the trouble. _________________ Last Watched: Who Was That Man I Saw You With?

I only have an Associate's Degree, so I'm only allowed to use duct tape and WD 40. _________________ Every parent has a favorite child. Usually the child belongs to the neighbors. |
