Hi,
It seems some dastardly foreign power is intercepting my posts, or maybe I have been brainwashed, or my mind swapped into another body, or maybe I am just rubbish at technology and failed to properly upload my earlier post LOL???!!!
Anyway here goes again!
I have the old A&E Emma Peel complete box set and all the other episodes on the old Contender releases. I have a couple of questions:
• Is there significant improvement in picture and sound quality in the 50th Anniversary set, and if so, is the improvement enough to warrant replacing my existing collection?
• Have there been any further developments on this whole getting the discs out of the sleeve issue?
• Is the 50th anniversary set likely to come out on Blu Ray (which I would prefer as this would be my final definitive collection)?
Many thanks for your help in advance,
Enrico |

Well I hope it wasn't concise to the point of being rude. It's just, as you can imagine, a couple of those questions have been asked before more than once. Best to just look through the threads for more info.
I've not bought the complete boxed set yet, but I believe some people are carefully removing the discs and keeping them separately and safely elsewhere. _________________

I've just come across a firm called DVD Royalty advertising a new complete box set for £70. It's at
http://www.dvdroyalty.co.uk/shop/the-avengers-dvd-collection/
Does anyone have experience of this? It is a really good price and way cheaper than Amazon's £300+ offer for the 50th anniversary set. Is this just the old disks recycled or the same as the remastered Studio canal set? Any advice appreciated.

"All 161 Uncut Episodes,
9 Complete Seasons"
Erm ..
It's up to you but I would advise caution with suppliers I'd never heard of.
I see they're also advertising the Batman TV series. Sounds decidedly dodgy .. _________________

Amazon has run out of stock and the listings are from opportunist resellers, I got mine for 119.94 from Amazon back in January 2011.
It may be the real set from DVD Royalty (it's probably the cheaper Dutch set which has bugger all extras) but if you don't want to risk it, others have it for 140-145 or so. DVD Collections has a price finder for you:

Alternatively, see if Optimum are still selling them direct, I forget the name of their shop though. _________________ Mrs Peel, you're needed!

Very disturbing to see the Complete set selling for over £340 though. It was £139.99 when I got it last August!
And I can't find the series-by-series sets under Cavalcade-of-DVDs either. Lucky we got in when we did, it seems!
Probably zero chance of them bringing out "The New Avengers", let alone BluRays. Shame. _________________ Last watched: The Man in the Mirror. |

Thanks folks for the advice/warnings. As a result I've done some Googling and it seems DVDroyalty is a new company based in Canada. Not a lot of info to go on but one wesite advises extreme caution as the DVDs they sell appear to be cheap pirated copies so not the real thing. I thought the price was too good to be true
I will try a few legitimate sellers and see if I can track down a copy. I've a suspicion that Canal have sold out so it could be over to ebay.

The season-by-season sets are still on sale in the UK, at about £30 each, so it would be £150 for all 5. _________________ Last watched: The Man in the Mirror. |

Keep an eye out for the HMV liquidation sale.
Poor old HMV. A great British institution gone. _________________

Killed by online sellers like Amazon, who only got better prices because they avoided tax. Naughty. _________________ Last watched: The Man in the Mirror. |

I've just been listening to Jeremy Vine talking about it this morning. This makes me unbelievably sad. Encouraging to hear lots of people phoning still like to buy hard copies of things, though. I just read a week or two ago that CD sales are relatively steady, and downloads are declining. A lot of the time, the downloads aren't even cheaper, especially considering you have to go and back-up the downloads yourself. It's a real shame.
What I don't know is what this means for HMV Canada. Does it go down with the British iteration, or is it somewhat independent?
EDIT: No, the Canadian side lives! My dream of buying a hard copy of a new Bowie album in an actual store will be fulfilled after all. Still very sad that the British one has gone into administration, though. Maybe it'll get a decent buyer who can put it back on solid ground? _________________ Last Watched: Who Was That Man I Saw You With?

I just saw that the sets were out of stock on Amazon.uk. Is Optimum pulling the sets and not producing any more of them?
Funny. I was just finally getting to the point of giving up hope for HD or blu ray versions of the series. Hoping that this may mean the next issue of the series is coming.
Thanks for the info and posts.
Seems strange that the set would go out of print in that it was just released in May of 2012??? Limited edition? |

All the suppliers I've looked at say the collection is not available so I guess it is now out of stock at Optimum. I'm in a dilema - to buy the separate season sets or wait for more to be released and/or hope for a blue ray release. At least with separate season collections I can spread the cost over several months so I think that will be my way forward.

I dare say the complete collection will be available on eBay. As for the individual season sets, just have the Optimum/StudioCanal address handy to return any faulty discs. _________________

Thanks.
Is there anything further on what is happening with the series then?
I noted the complete set was a "limited edition". Seems VERY limited to pull it after only 7 months?
Hopefully another complete series release is in the works.
Hopefully a Region Free blu ray set. |

I cannot understand why there hasn't been a Region 1 re issue of The Avengers series in the United States.
The Emma Peel series DVD sets are going for $200+...
http://www.ebay.com/csc/i.html?_sacat=0&_from=R40&_nkw=the+avengers+dvd+peel&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc
THERE IS A DEMAND TO HAVE THE SERIES OUT IN THE US!!!!!!
I have a copy of the Bonus disc as well and noted it's going for around $40!! May have to part with that one, but it would be nice to know that I have all of the materials in another set.... |

I don't know, 'limited edition' could mean anything, but my guess is a box set of this kind is expensive to produce so unless sales were high it was going to be an extremely short term offer.
The Avengers fan base is nothing like as strong as Doctor Who and Star Trek so I'm grateful for anything Avengers-related.
I agree with you it's surprises me there has been no Avengers releases since A&E which was what, 15 years ago or something? _________________
