Tony McKay, Annette Hill, Chris Gabb and Sam Mitchell, who had something to do with the competition run by Lumiere and organising the tour around Avengers locations, which took place later, or the day after.
Tony could tell you more regarding that and where they went on the tour. |
I probably could as well - as I arranged the tour ! Mitchell is one of my middle names, which I've used for various projects in the past, but I'm more usually known as Sam Denham. The launch party was actually for the Lumiere release of the Avengers on video and took place around October 1993. My involvement - with Tony, Annette and Chris, was to arrange a 'Be an Avenger for the Day' competition which was run in a national newspaper, and I think also TV Zone magazine. I have some photos which I could try and scan at some point which include some of the guests mentioned. Director James Hill was also there, as I remember speaking to him about his involvement with the series. A very memorable day. |
Sam, I did point out in a previous posting that I got it wrong and the video launch was for Lumiere, rather than Contender. You didn't inform us where the location tour went, although I seem to recall Tony mentioning High Canons and Aldbury (Murdersville). Okay then spill the beans... what did James Hill have to say regarding The Avengers? |

Hi Mike
Yes, I didn't notice until after posting my message that you'd already corrected the information about the launch being by Lumiere - sorry ! As far as the tour route is concerned - and this is from hazy memory - I think the prize winners were asked to meet at Watford Junction station, from where they were taken on a minibus tour which stopped at the International University, Caldecote Towers/Rosary Priory, Letchmore Heath (for lunch), Shenley Hall, Ridge and the Edgewarebury Hotel (for afternoon tea), before being driven into London. I can't remember stopping at High Canons - although we may have - but I'm sure we didn't go out to Aldbury- that would have been way off our route. I also arranged for a friend of mine to join us as a Steed lookalike, and Annette wore a very Avengersesque outfit as well. We had also arranged for someone to bring a vintage Bentley along to meet us at Letchmore Heath, but as the weather wasn't that great he turned up in a vintage Rolls which didn't resemble any of the vehicles used in the series !
Regarding James Hill, my conversation with him was only very brief, but he did give the impression that he felt Brian was sometimes given more credit than he should have been for the creative development of the show. I wish it might have been possible to hear more about his contribution to the series, but he died the following year. |

The Avengers (or the nearest we could get to them !) on location at Shenley Hall during the 'Be An Avenger For the Day' event. Otherwise known as Roy McMillan and Annette Hill (previously McKay). |

Great images.
That was the year Top Shop went all swinging sixties with their collection, plus any image with both Diana and Linda in shot has to be considered something special. |

There' someone who looks like (Prisoner fan) Martin Goldthorpe near the beginning of the tape.
Why was Nickolas Grace there? |
I think Nickolas Grace was appearing in a play with Honor Blackman at the time and she invited him along. |
