Yes, because James Insell's colour recovery digital software that uses the chroma dots requires a mathematical accuracy that's way beyond what the human eye can detect. That's completely different to how good a 405-line picture can look however "accurately" it's done, its actual picture element resolution is still well below SD resolution. You may get a slightly more rounded spot edge at microscopic level but no gain to the human eye. The data for extra detail is just not there to begin with - CR software is a totally different "perceiver" to what human eyes receive. Indeed the spot wobble used to eliminate the black banding between lines would have obliterated any sharpness gain.

It's like sound that's compressed at higher than 400 kbps - it sounds exactly the same to human ears as uncompressed sound as any gain in detail is beyond the human brain's capacity to resolve. It's just lost data. I few could go back and film Macnee and Blackman with film cameras or SD VT ones, we'd gain a lot... but the detail is, to coin a phrase, lost in time.

I disagree.

And regarding your comment about the reason colour recovery scans are in HD being for "mathematical" reasons... if SD video can capture all the detail, why do they scan in HD? I disagree that it is impossible for the human eye to detect the difference. Poppycock!

Besides, I've seen HD tests performed by StudioCanal on The Decapod and there was more detail than in the final SD restoration.

People would only moan that the quality wasn't as good as the film series or Doctor Who. You can't win - you're damned if you do and damned if you don't

We'll have to agree to disagree Alan. I can't see where you're getting "more detail" from, unless you mean more grain from the negative. The telerecorder wouldn't have shown any more lines than were actually there on the original 405 VT. All you can do is resolve the dots a bit "rounder", which might make a smoother picture (at microscopic level) but not add more details. But we'd be going round in circles to keep discussing this so let's each have our denomination/articles of faith Smile

The whole point is that 625 lines do not marry up with the 405, whereas 1080 lines will more accurately resolve them. It's not just mathematics, either, as I've seen the results for myself so I'm not just going at this from a theoretical standpoint. I've seen it in practice.
