Just did a comparison between my US series 5 BluRay and the new UK:
Picture is much sharper - less (or no?) noise reduction on the UK release. The US is much softer. Fabric details especially pop.
Here's one comparison. I'll try and do more later:

There has to be a high frequency of subtle colour/shade changes in Emma's outfit in order reproduce the lumps on the purple fabric. This "appears" in the UK edition but has been substantially reduced in the US edition.
It's also interesting to note that there is a similar manifestation of this in John's(!) pin stripes, which involves something closer to black and white transitions as opposed to the colour transitions in Emma's attire. Actually, when the picture is converted to B&W, Emma's clothes still keep a good a amount of detail in the UK edition (though I suppose it highly depends in what way this conversion to B&W is done?).
It would be interesting to know what the bit rate is in the UK and US editions. I think it is highly likely that the bit rate in the US edition is lower, which was achieved by reducing the amount of high frequency "data".
But to answer the "question" more directly, there is noise reduction but I doubt it was intentional. I think it's just a "symptom" of the bit rate reduction that was done. |

The French sets (to series 4, 5, 6) are scheduled to be released all together on October 20th. The sets look like the English and German ones. Now the million pound question is: what will they do with the 'cut scenes', scenes that weren't in the previous French copies, will they add subtitles, dub them once again? I hope they won't use those cut prints again...I wouldn't be surprised. _________________ I've been blessed by The Avengers! |

Bitrates for the episode "The Fear Merchants":
UK Blu Ray: 22.5 mbps, file size: 8.64 gb, frame rate: 24
US Blu Ray: 12.8 mbps, file size: 5.14 gb, frame rate: 23.98
US iTunes: 4.0 mbps, file size: 1.7 5gb, frame rate: 23.98
Attached is another screengrab - this one from the above mentioned episode:

Thanks for the screen grabs. Glad I waited for the UK release, which I received last week. Absolutely beautiful. Looks stunning in HD! |

One minor complaint about the set, though: I wish they could print out the disc number on the face of the disc itself. It would make things easier when you want to watch a particular episode. And one of the episodes are still called "Return of the Cybernaughts". |

Yes, disk numbers would have been great as would an index of where the extras appear on each disk.... |

Hello, it's me again. Just watched "Who's Who???". What a terrific episode that one is! Thanks to the higher resolution I was able to see the label of the record Lola and Basil are dancing to in Steed's apartment. It says Mantovani and the date "7-11-57". Mantovani is hardly the kind of stuff you put on if you want to dance!
There's also "BRITISH" and "CORP Ltd.", plus stuff that seems to have been crossed out with a black felt pen. I couldn't figure out the rest of the text, but the record itself seems to be one of those 16 inch transcription discs, often used by radio back in those days.

there's a thread somewhere in the Britmovies forum where they identify album covers that have appeared in film & television, I think these are listed there. _________________ Mrs Peel, you're needed!

This could be a disc of library music belonging to the Associated British Picture Corporation, who owned both Elstree Studios where the filmed episodes of The Avengers were made and ABC Television. |

Thanks for the info, Michael. I tried to google this but couldn't find a matching label design. Or any label at all actually. |

That Guy Warren LP is actually a real party album.
Check out this song from it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lq_rzjzaIfM
I can imagine Basil and Lola (or Steed and Mrs Peel) dance to it! |

I only said they weren't the most recent swinging Sixties hits, not that they weren't a cool groove. _________________ Mrs Peel, you're needed!

I have been having problems getting the discs to play consistently. Has anyone else experienced problems with loading or skipping? My other region B blu rays are fine on my player. I'm just trying to figure if the problem is my player or the discs. |

No problems on my Oppo player. Is your player updated with the latest software? |

It's a crappy Orei bdp M-2. It hasn't had an update since 3/14. I figured it was probably the player as I hadn't heard of any problems. I'll see if I can update it, or more than likely buy a new multi region player. |

Anyone noticed slight synchronisation problems on the episode Mission: Highly Improbable on the UK BD release? Or is it just me? Picture quality was rather disappointing for a BD too, I think. |
