Some season four episodes were broadcast late in France, early 90s for some of them in English with French subtitles in a show called ‘Continentales’.
Other episodes, known because already seen in the 70s, were broadcast in that show but some parts were missing; for instance, Too Many Christmas Trees: Steed’s dream of the first sequence isn’t complete.
I have had this season four (the one I prefer by far) in various ways.
- French VHS recorded in late 80s.
- Some episodes in English with French subtitles recorded in early 90s
- DVD kiok edition of 2002 with numerous cuts and also the strange inserts in French; for instance, "Fellows Fertilizers Ltd, service de documentation agricole" in Silent Dust….
- Optimum version; at last the episodes were complete and some parts were new for me, but the passages around the cut scenes have a grainy image.
- French Blu-rays. Perfect pictures, complete and no grain, but it is not possible to watch the episode in English without the French subtitles which spoil one quarter of the screen.
- English Blu-rays will be one of my presents for next Christmas!

Good collection, Denis. Smile So it turns out that in the French Blu Ray editions, the quality of cut shots are as quality of the general (or almost) as opposed to Optimum DVD? Surprised Well, I would not wanted to look intrusive, Denis, but if you have a desire, it would be interesting to see screenshots of any cut in comparison from Optimum and French Blu Ray. Sadly, I do not have any Blu Ray edition on moment, as my current player reads these discs only with the region 3. I was planning to upgrade in the past year, but the crisis in Russia has canceled these plans. But OK, I'll buy it sooner or later. Wink

Denis, you mentioned on Le Monde des Avengers that Continentales version of The Thirteenth Hole contains cuts in other places of episode. Were these absolutely other cuts or some of it touched to part of the cuts on French DVD-kiosk edition?
The main intrigue - what is presents the footage with Dr. Adams and Jackson on the golf course, when they waiting Steed there, by Continentales version... Rolling Eyes
Oh, seems my curiosity has no limits. Very Happy

Thanks Denis. It sounds as if there's just The 13th hole that has been cut slightly on the UK Studio canal dvd set. I'd have been happier with the compete episode, fuzzy shots and all. I didn't notice any missing footage of Steed or any leading ladies in the Canal box sets. Let me know if you find any missing major scenes. I'll be watching more carefully next time! Smile Rich.

I haven’t all of them any more. My video recorder is broken; so the VHS cassettes are forgotten. Season four of the Avengers is the only season of any series that I had in three different kinds. I can’t remember exactly where the cuts are on The Thirteenth Hole broadcast by Continentales but they were part of some cuts on the French kiosk edition. I think that the sequence ‘‘It really is the height of pessimism to have a hat lined with chain mail.’ was not completely cut as on the DVD. When Dr. Adams and Jackson on the golf course are waiting for Steed, there was a short cut on both Continentale and DVD kiosk. I watch many times the passage with subtitles on and off. The last line is cut but nevertheless, it appears on the subtitles!
I have noticed that some new material – the cut shots – was not of the same quality as the rest of the episode on Optimum (for instance on The Thirteenth Hole, after ‘Let’s ask, Mr Reed’, the picture becomes ‘grainy’). On the French Blu-ray, we can’t distinguish from the quality of the picture where the cut was. I hope it is so as good on the English Blu-ray.
I can’t make screenshots from Blu-ray with my material and I’ll ask a friend if he can do it. Anyway, the picture on Blu-ray is really wonderful and I do not think it can be upgraded.

It is sad to hear that your video recorder is broken, Denis, I have two and one broken too (a problem with the image - but it was so originally, when one collector of films gifted me it for free on the video market, where I worked). Well, on other hand, it maybe a small catastrophe if there is not many rare things in the video in home collection (+ it still can be digitized). Smile I have not watched the own VHSs for a long time, except The Avengers (and it was in last years only most for comparisons with other versions).
It's funny, but I have more video cassettes with the Avengers than DVDs.
Very Happy

If the sequence "It really is the height of pessimism to have a hat lined with chain mail" was not completely cut as on the DVD, it's similar to A&E version (I think the French VHS and DVD edition from 2001 with this episode could have the same version).

Seen it, turns there are two cutting on DVD kiosk. One with Dr. Adams and Jackson (bit of footage without dialogues), and second, you mentioned. Wink
But is good chance, that on one or some video editions of episode, there was the full version of this scene. I hope one day we'll find out. Wink

Oh, I remember when the French Blu Rays were released, I was waiting for detailed reviews, but to this day mostly I know about it just what was stated in info from the online stores. Also I dreamed to see how looks the French Blu Ray menu of The Avengers. Rolling Eyes
Well, now main waiting are already for coming reviews for Australian "colorful" set with new bonus-material. Excellent attractive design. When I saw it for first time I had a desire to print the front covers and place it on the shelf. Very Happy
Thank you for your kindness, Denis, as for desire to post here the screenshots of mentioned earlier cuts, it will be interesting to look. Smile

It’s strange because each passage around the cut scenes of the Studio Canal version has a grainy image on Optimum. For instance, when Steed and Mrs Peel follow Reed to question him (Let’s ask Mr Reed), the image is perfect but becomes suddenly grainy for the questioning.

strange...indeed !
