7/10

It's a weird episode this as it feels like a totally different show at times that Steed and Cathy just walked into. Strange coming from the script editor, Richard Bates. It does feel very pick and mix. It's not really a plot that feels very Avengerish. Thankfully it's got a designer, Patrick Downing, who gets the show and really goes for some iconic designs. The wonderful chess shop, the bizarre chess motif also for the mortuary and the Alice in Wonderland restaurant. The home set is very solid.

Whenever there's a pretty lady, Macnee always has good chemistry with her. It's Jennie Linden's turn this time. Corin Redgrave, sadly the only member of the family to guest in The Avengers. I love to have seen Lynn do a turn. Leslie Sands is one of those good solid, frightening looking actors. It's always good to see Burt Kwouk, does sinister so well. Shame his Kill the King performance is unviewable.

Kim Mills is a director who I've not had much regard in terms of The Avengers but after some very shakey starts, he really found himself in season 3 and though never having that stylish look I love about the show, his work was very solid by the end. He did lots of Public Eye episodes (written by Roger Marshall) and that's a series that is highly rated. He died in 2006 apparently.

The episode has a good pace on it.

Then we get to the final scene and bid a fond farewell to Cathy Gale in a scene written by Brian Clemens. I think it was right to go out with a rather frivolous casual scene as an emotional departure wouldn't have felt right. It feels like they probably did see each other again and not as final as Emma's.

Flatly directed and the script is rather lacklustre. However Corin Redgrave makes a good villain and there are some good set pieces. A lacklustre finale for Mrs Gale.

9 for me. I remember that Gary Watson is in it and that Steed gets smoothly away with his joke about the, for James Bond, departing Cathy Gale. So I really liked this one partly because I saw Gary Watson who was the best actor of Henry V on the Marlowe Dramatic Society's Shakespeare LP record releases.
