This is the picture of Anna Cropper that makes me think she's the woman in The Master Minds:

I think you're right, Piers, the most suitable face.

It is interesting that in that newspaper article the following was indicated:

The 26-year-old lovely with a reputation for carrying out her own stunt work in TV series such as The New Avengers and The Professionals.

Yes, there are similarities to draw, but Anna was definitely filmed in The Avengers before Diana Rigg was cast.

I see the newspaper states "It is expected that he will be accompanied by wife actress Anna Cropper who appeared in the Avengers series on ITV" - which would suggest an episode already broadcast, so series 3 or earlier, but newspapers are not always accurate!!

Liz Shepherd was fired on 3 December and Diana was ANNOUNCED as the new Mrs Peel on 14 December, but clearly cast the previous week as the press knew they had chosen the new star already, probably on 10 or 11 December.

Of course, casting for other roles in episodes already in pre-production would have already happened as they would be in the read through and rehearsal stage by then.

Peter Graham Scott directed the abandoned first version of Town of no Return 29 October - 13 November 1964 and was then put in charge of the auditions for Emma Peel starting on 4 December.

The Murder Market, starring Diana Rigg, was 23 November - 4 December 1964 under Wolf Rilla when it was stopped as Liz had been fired. I assume 4 December was location work without Liz as she had already left the set.

Peter Graham Scott, fresh off doing the auditions, did three days of filming to wrap it up, 16-18 December 1964 - presumably all the Emma Peel scenes and they kept everything else Wolf had filmed.

The Master Minds started pretty much immediately, also under Peter as he saved the show, 17 December 1964 - 8 January 1965.

Given that timeline, Anna was most likely in a previous series, or in one of "Town of No Return" mark 1, "The Murder Market", or "The Master Minds".

Indeed, Diana was just ANNOUNCED as the new Mrs Peel on 14 December, but clearly final decision shortly before the announcement (10 or 11 December? Well, 12 is also good if we are talking about decisions and not about usual working days).

I wonder if there is any confirmation that The Master Minds really went into production on 17 December 1964? Rolling Eyes That is, you can easily be right, Piers, if there are shooting date errors that we have to believe. Wink

As for that note about Anna from Nantwich Chronicle newspaper (12 December 1964), to me it sounds like Anna already filmed or taped in "The Avengers" before December 12th, hardly within the editorial error of the point in my opinion. Following the conclusion from my sentence above, I'm not sure if the some bits of series were filmed during the search for a replacement for Elizabeth, so I still believe that the shooting resumed after December 12, although of course here we need official papers.

I think I read somewhere the Murder Market funeral cortege location scenes were shot after Liz was fired but before Diana started?

Here are my lead contenders for Anna in The Avengers, none of them are particularly convincing so she might have been in one of the early series 1 episodes for which we don't have a good record:

The fourth one looks like her (notably the forehead and nose), maybe the fifth a bit.

Spot on, Franky - that's from "The Grandeur That Was the Worst Episode"

I'm really not much good a recognizing faces of actors, so I'll leave this to the rest of you. But I am impressed with your research. Keep up the good work.
