That's hilarious!

Even in England, I see the reissue of the classic boardgame "Escape From Colditz" has had the swastika removed from the 1970s box cover art and replaced by a black Prussian imperial eagle in a white circle, fooling nobody!

Today's update wraps up the newspaper clippings project... for now. Hong Kong reports episodes but often doesn't seem to identify which one they are so it's unrewarding work...

Every day I look at the world from my window
17 September 2022

The New Avengers episodes get their newspaper cuttings. As we delve into series 2 the press coverage dries up rapidly and the last few episodes have very few press clippings at all.

Elsewhere, I've spotted Dee Shenderey/Shipman in Bizarre and Steven Scott in Death on the Slipway.

Oh, the Straits Times online is really patchy... Denis, if you're around, do you have your data? Wayback didn't capture your Malaysia or Singapore pages.

Thanks Denis. I note that the channel numbers don't mean much in Malaysia, as the same programme is on different channels in different parts of the country. It expanded into two programmes sometime in late 1969/early 1970. Singapore had Singuapura 5 and Singapura 8 from the mid Sixties.

My series 4 index will soon have this:

Hong Kong

Rediffusion Television Hong Kong started screening The Avengers on July 24 1965 at 10.40pm, just before the Saturday night end of transmission. Unfortunately, the South China Post is very reluctant to list which episode was shown when, but we know it started with Box of Tricks due to the scathing review of the episode printed the following Saturday, July 31 1965. The review is confusing, though, as it seems to suggest the reviewer was already familiar with the show and disappointed to have Venus instead of Cathy. The late time slot was kept until October 23 and then, as it had been a rating success, The Avengers was shown again the next day, October 24 1965, in the prime time Sunday 6.30pm timeslot. It stayed at this time until January 1966, when ten Diana Rigg episodes were shown, commencing on January 23 1966 in the 6.30pm timeslot.

Malaysia

TV Malaysia ran a fairly jumbled run of The Avengers, starting with series 4 in 1967-8, with two episodes of series 5. At this time TV Malaysia only had one station, which had different channel numbers in different parts of the country.
On December 8 1968, still with one station, they started 13 episodes of series 2 with Traitor in Zebra. This ran until March 2 1969.
About a year later, TV Malaysia, on their Programme Two station as TV Malaysia had expanded by this time, they recommenced series 2 with Intercrime on February 7 1970 in a combined run with series 3 which ran up to May 1970 and was then replaced with series 5 which led straight into series 6, which finished on June 19 1971.

Singapore

TV Singapura started showing series 4 about the same time as TV Malaysia - often with different episodes on the same night - and occasionally the same timeslot, but appears to never have shown any episodes from series 2 or 3.

TV Singapura had a similar approach to TV Malaysia, despite having two stations as far back as 1967. The Avengers were mostly broadcast on TV Singapura 5, with the occasional episode on TV Singapura 8. Starting in August 1967, Singapore saw series 4, often on the same night - and occasionally the same timeslot, as the nearby competing TV Malaysia. They saw a maximum of seventeen episodes as on December 24 1967 they had From Venus with Love followed by 22 more episodes, some of which are identified in the newspaper listings as also being from series 5.

Great work, Piers. I've posted the section for Hong Kong on Steedumbrella too, so I'll take a look at your results later for comparison. Wink

Many thanks, Nick. Smile Well, it wasn't difficult for Singapore and Malaysia when you could study English-language newspapers. Another cases are Mexico, for example, where you had to look for information from magazines on different sites and South Korea where you need to translate characters from a newspaper.

Thanks Denis, I've started on my Asia tour of discovery, Series 4 is the most complete so far, the others have summaries. Hopefully your Hong Kong data is better than mine, as I have tons of gaps!

I've finally worked out the problem with the table sorting on the series pages - the regexp had an error and I foolishly assumed the library I was using was correct. So, I've now worked that out and extended things a bit by not overwhelming casual visitors with too much information. The series pages now show some core information, and the viewer can choose to see every ITV region if they want to. Content may be king, but the customer is always right.

I've also started adding details about broadcasts of The Avengers in other parts of the world, turning my gaze East. If you can fill any of the many gaps in ny information, please let me know!

p.s. I've found that The Winnipeg Evening Tribune is a good source for Manitoban broadcasts on CJAY and that has definitely confirmed the scheduling of "build a Better Mousetrap".

Series 2 and Series 3 are updated with more international broadcast information, and I've separated the Australian data from the UK data in the series index pages. I'll add all the additional broadcast information to the episode detail pages soon.

Delving further into Canada, it's surprising to find they exactly followed the UK broadcast order for series 2, then followed it with 12 to 15 episodes of series 3.

It looks very strongly like the whole of series 4 was shown in all areas, with six episodes either being pre-empted and rescheduled, or repeated.

My series 2/3 summary is:

Canada did not have network television like the United States and also did not have anything like Britain’s ITV companies, so local broadcasters showed series 2 and part of series 3 in a combined season, with some areas - such as Ontario, Manitoba and suburban Alberta showing them from September 1964 until June 1965, while areas like British Columbia and regional parts of Alberta didn't start until December 1965. I have shown CJAY-TV, Winnipeg, Manitoba, who showed the series 2 episodes in the exact same order as the British transmissions, then followed with fifteen episodes from series 3 in a different order, no doubt driven by what was available to them at the time. There are three episodes unidentified, but one would appear to be The Wringer from the description “Steed is suspected of being an informer” - but it could easily be a repeat or pre-empted The Nutshell.

Given the six apparent pre-emptions in series 4, I'm betting on the identification of The Wringer as being wrong, and it was The Nutshell again - but if a newspaper names the episode, or has a different summary, I'd love to see it!

My series 4 summary is:

Most English-language channels in Canada, including Quebec, saw every episode of series 4 networked across the country in prime time on Sunday nights from January 16 to August 21, 1966. It was even synchronised across time zones, so Ontario and Quebec saw it at 7.30pm, while Manitoba and Saskatchewan saw it at the same time, that is 6.30pm locally. I assume that meant Newfoundland, Labrador and Nova Scotia saw it at 8.30pm but I have not seen any listings from those provinces. British Columbia, Alberta and possibly southern Saskatchewan ran them later in the year, as they weren’t going to be starting episodes at 5.30pm. They saw ten episodes, starting on December 2, 1966; it’s possible there were more shown at a later date. CBTV Quebec showed ten episodes The Avengers in French from January 19 until March 31, 1967.

The Winnipeg Tribune lists A Surfeit of H2O on May 22, Man-Eater of Surrey Green on 29 May, Room without a View on June 26, The Master Minds on July 10, Dial a Deadly Number on July 17, and Too Many Christmas Trees on July 31. This would suggest that these six episodes were either repeated or pre-empted nationally, as that accords with the episodes know to be shown in other regions and explains apparent gaps in programming, and why the series ran for 32 weeks instead of 26 weeks.

I'm going to edit my Canadian summaries, they did have an Independent Television Organisation (ITO) and most of the charter stations (maybe all?) joined the CTV network in 1961.

have enjoyed reading about the Canadian program notes, as I'm familiar with the CBC, growing up in both Detroit & Ann Arbor, and canada was only minutes away...and spending a couple summers of my youth, visiting relatives in Regina, (SK)
