Mrs Macnee was of course Katherine Woodville who was in the very first Avengers episode, Hot Snow, playing the unfortunate Peggy - the fiance of Davd Keel that gets bumped off and started the whole thing off.

They divorced in 1969.

She also appeared in Propellant 23, although she and Macnee didn't seem to have much chemistry in the few scenes they shared. I enjoyed reading his account of the marriage in his bio - expecially about the costs of keeping her horse.

Thanks for the video link!

I did not know these details about her and Hot Snow. I'll have to add some commentary captions!

Yes, thanks Helen. I like how you've 'top and tail'-ed it with The Avengers logo.

Woodville wanted to audition for the show, as I remember as Emma Peel. I don't know how far she got. I know PM wasn't particularly enthusiastic.

She also left him and came back twice. It was her leaving the first time that convinced Diana Rigg to stay on as Emma for the colour season. She came to tell Patrick she was quitting and he was so upset he asked her to stay on as a sort of support system. Shows what good friends they were.

The second time he turned her down flat.

OK, I've modifed the video with captions and new music. Something melancholy to reflect the emotional turmoil they may have both been going through...

Lovely, Helen, and you squeezed a lot of factoids in there! The only quibble--Woodville was Patrick's second wife, his first, Barbara, being the mother of his children. Love the music, too!

Well, I'll just have to fix it!

A short time later... Helen says, "All Fixed!" (fingers crossed)

Great! Thanks Helen and to all the others with their 'factoids' - never knew that Diana stayed on because of what you say! What a woman!

From Blind in One Ear:

"...I was surprised by a visit by Diana Rigg...I had to listen aghast as she told me that she would be leaving The Avengers.

...

Preoccupied as I was with my private problems [the divorce], I wasn't the best person to give Diana the advice and comfort she sought...

I begged Diana to stay on. By the end of the evening she'd agreed, for my sake..."

So we have Kate Woodville to thank for the Emma colour season!

It really is worth it to read Blind in One Ear. There was quite a bit more to the story but I didn't want to type it all. Patrick also went on a holiday with Honor around the same time, to try and help him through things. The papers got ahold of it and blew it out of proportion. Although, Steed and Cathy take off for sunny climes? I suppose that would've been pretty newsworthy.

Don't expect anything much on TNA, though. Fewer than three pages, with the barest of descriptions, as though Patrick was hoping by skipping through it he could pretend it hadn't happened. He redeemed himself with The Avengers and Me, though, and there's lot of good stuff about his relationships with his various costars.

Always be aware that, Like The Avengers And Me, Blind In One Ear is Pat's view and may not reflect the true picture.

I read that Pat gave Honor photocopies of the chapters of ... And Me and her recaction was that she didn't remember it the same way at all.

I believe he gave it to all his costars, and everyone except Joanna said something along the lines of "Patrick, your recollection doesn't quite match mine" or "Say that and you're sued!" so it's apparently an edited account. I know Patrick's memories of the series are a bit dodgy, but he did do both books with a co-writer and a lot of input from the people involved in the series, so some of it must be accurate. It's the best I've got, so unless something says otherwise I'll have to stick with it!

I agree with Dandy about Pat's account of his personal and prof. life as written in his books. At certain moments they contradict or it's incomplete. For example, according to Blind In One Ear, Pat and Kate came together twice after the initial break-up not the one time as his book Avengers and Me states. As for Diana, I knew she was devoted to Pat during the show but didn't rationalise that part of the reason for her staying on was to support Pat emotionally during his marriage problems. I guess I didn't read much into her actions. Now, I understand why to this day Patrick's been so especially fond of Diana.

Well that book was co-written and a lot of it wasn't by Patrick himself, Dave Rogers I think supplied most of the text and it was written "in the first person" to portray it as Patrick's words. It's not explicit who wrote what... I'd trust Patrick's autobiography more, he's likely to have vetted it carefully!

Famously, ALL witnesses are unreliable - even just a few weeks later, several people who experienced the same event can all recall it differently. When you're talking decades, even more so... That's just the nature of memory - for everyone, even Honor. Chances are the "true events" were something else again!
