Hostage had it's moments. I was not wild about Gambit's lack of participation here. Made to look weaker than Steed. But there were nice touches as always. Gambit asking to be invited over to Purdy's mums house was quite a nice touch when he discovers Purdey is really missing. _________________ "He likes his tea stirred anti-clockwise." |

7.
I thought this had a decent enough pace to keep it interesting but the end was sudden and weak.
I don't mind the occasional glimpse of the team's HQ but I felt there was too much here. On balance I think I prefer the mystery of Steed's employer that the original series maintained. And what is it with the chiefs with slight disablements? A few programmes back it was Ronald Leigh-Hunt with an eye patch, now we have William Franklin with a limp. |

Presumably the reasoning is that they were all agents who can't serve in the field now because of their injuries. All the ones that are still able-bodied are avoiding the desk jobs, like Steed! _________________ Last Watched: Who Was That Man I Saw You With?

Good point, I'm sure you're right. | I thought the same thing. Even about the villains. I guess it makes them more interesting and diverse. But in reality, I doubt anyone with limps ans in wheelchairs is going to run the agency nor be the diabolical master mind. _________________ "He likes his tea stirred anti-clockwise." |

5/10
Whilst it has its moments, it feels very tired and a bit like a left over series 1 episode that they forgot to broadcast what with the old appartments/houses. I wish they'd made more of the abandoned fairground as that could have allowed for some creepy sequences. |

Purdey impresses...running down the stairs at start...busy lady; look she throws before tackling THREE adversaries at her place; and about to step in to save a struggling Gambit from the adversary who had chloroformed her ...; and finally squaring it away with Suzy for Steed ... MATCHLESS
Watch the couch scene...Purdey certainly moves even though she's out cold...between takes Hadn't realised Purdey had such really skinny Legs until she is being lifted into the coffin and her knee-high boots slide down them ! |

I quite like this one for the relationship between the characters, even if it's pretty much a repeat of earlier plots. As I watch these episodes mostly for Steed, he's most enjoyable here, being a badass without even trying.
Gambit: Do you realize you and I have never faced each other.
Steed: You're too young to die, Gambit. Besides, I never fight fair.
He doesn't either. |

It's been 7 years since this one came to the top, so I decided to watch this one next.
I used to have this on VHS from its repeat on Central in about 1986/7, and it might be one of the ones still on the original video form that time. I always enjoyed it and still enjoyed it partially this time.
It's a good self contained story about the department, but is part of an increasing trend of stories which happened in the Thorson era where the story centers around the department / agents in the department instead of what is happening in the world which needs to be avenged. These types of stories are ok occasionally, such as The Nutshell in series 3, but when they become more of the story telling then the programme becomes more introspective. It seems there are quite a few stories in TNA where they are investigating themselves, or in their departments etc. I concur with the above comments about perhaps too much was seen in the department - indeed such as straightforward building and organisation, one can't help but what they made of Mother's headquarters in the past.
Having said that, I think the mole in the department was revealed a little too soon - it would have been better to be kept guessing for longer.
A great guest cast keep this moving along, with many strong performances.
Considering this was well into the run of TNA, I was a little surprised watching it again about the relationship between Steed and Gambit. It seemed very frosty - almost is if Purdey was the glue between the two of them. Steed seems to show very little concern for Gambit - but perhaps that is more of the professional relationship that they should have.
Some great direction from Sidney Hayers - nice to see an original series director still going with the programme, with some nice bedding music from Johnson.
Mostly, our three heroes are independent of each other for much of the episode, only reuniting for the finale, where you do miss the relationship they seem to have together. The chemistry between Joanna and Gareth is a strength of this era and one does miss their banter. I do like Gambit's line to Purdey's mother that he hopes to have dinner with her soon - interesting how Gambit has already committed that telephone number to memory....
Overall, I give this 7. _________________ You really must have a word with that cleaning lady.... |
