Discussion on famous stunt men in Avengers, identifying them in classic roles in other films. Romo Gorraro in Legacy of Death chasing for a treasure and then 13 years later playing in a similar kind of movie, "Raiders of the Lost Ark".
What their specialties? (such as Alf Joint on high falls). Favorite scenes. _________________ "He likes his tea stirred anti-clockwise."

I think that all the stuntmen in The Avengers were already known before, because stunts on such sort of show are an important component. Not sure what they would dare to take a beginner. Well, there were novices as for the actors/actress, or doubles but it is quite another topic. All stuntmen were already known before.
Romo Gorrara, Cliff Diggins, Paul Weston, Rocky Taylor, Frank Maher, Gerry Crampton, Peter J. Elliott, Billy Cornelius, Terry Plummer, Joe Dunne, Ray Austin, Terry Richards, Les Crawford, Alf Joint, Peter Brace, Terry York, Richard Graydon, Denny Powell, Art Thomas, Bill Cummings, Joe Farrar, Terry Maidment, Paddy Ryan, Max Faulkner, Fred Haggerty etc...
In general, many of these became famous thanks to the participation in films about James Bond. _________________ Denis

There's a good piece about the stuntmen on The Persuaders! written by Jon Auty featuring many of those names that's free to view here:
http://issuu.com/jonauty/docs/behind_the_stunts_-_the_persuaders_
Ray Austin probably went on to be the most famous but as a director rather than a stuntman. _________________ "No ma'm, I'm a Texan." |

Correctly noted. In general, Ray is most famous as a director, but before 1968 he was famous as a stuntman and stunt arranger. _________________ Denis |

And how they were sometimes hired for similar scenes. Or just interesting stories about them. One that you probably already know:
Alf Joint specialized in high falls. He played an incompetent agent who fell flat on his face from a high fall from a building in Legacy of Death. In Goldfinger, the classic line from Bond when Alf gets electrocuted, "Positively shocking". Piers helped me put the 2 together as I had not realized this was the same stunt guy. _________________ "He likes his tea stirred anti-clockwise." |

If I remember correctly, Alf did the jump at Reichenbach Falls at the end of the Jeremy Brett interpretation of Sherlock Holmes' The Final Problem. _________________ "No ma'm, I'm a Texan." |

I did not know that Alf was in the Jeremy Britt Sherlock Holmes. Many thanks. I was really quite impressed with him. He had a very short scene but most memorable in TA. It takes a real competent stunt man to pull off a fall like that and land flat on ones face (Legacy of Death). _________________ "He likes his tea stirred anti-clockwise." |

I'm going from memory from a book I read 30 years ago but I'm pretty sure it was him. Roy Scammell, although not an Avengers stuntman as far as I'm aware, is also a high fall specialist and is still still doing them even though he's 83. He has the distinction of shooting himself on-screen - basically he was doubling someone in a scene in Doctor Who in the early 70's who was shot and had to fall from a radio transmitter. This scene was shot before there was an insert of a soldier firing at the person concerned. The fall went fine but when the close-up of the soldier was filmed the actor concerned wasn't very convincing so Roy grabbed the rifle, got the uniform and was filmed taking the shot at himself. _________________ "No ma'm, I'm a Texan." |

I am sure that is a story you would not forget!!!
These stunt guys sure have a sense of timing and humour.
Those high falls years ago were done with mattresses in part to break the fall. Was it mattresses and boxes? I met a stunt man who worked a lot in Hollywood now 90 yo who did high falls. I was quite amazed. _________________ "He likes his tea stirred anti-clockwise." |

Alf Joint and Marc Boyle did that jump - together as Holmes and Moriartry - they had safely wires attached but it was still a 360 foot drop. _________________ Mrs Peel, you're needed!

Last time I watched the episode "The Thirteenth Hole", noticed to a pleasant surprise that stunt double for Patrick Allen is Billy Dean.
Billy Dean in 1964:
Billy was a frequent actor and stuntman on British films and TV in the period 1960s - 1980s. He appeared in such television series like The Saint and Doctor Who, was in James Bond films, stunt in Superman, war films, etc...
At the moment this is the only single Avengers episode where I saw Billy.
Also, seems, that "The Thirteenth Hole" is first episode, where Rocky Taylor was stunt double for Patrick Macnee. Before it were mostly Mike Stevens and Cliff Diggins in 4 season. _________________ Denis |

Episode "Castle De'ath".
Great, dear fans, finally Billy Cornelius actually was in 4 season.
Yes, Billy, our famous stunt, which we IAvengers fans) thought previously for many years, played in many episodes of the series, until it turned out that we were confused with another face. Then, by the method of calculating there came result, that seems he appeared in only one episode of the sixth season, Super Secret Cypher Snatch. And it has so to today, if we will consider Billy as actor.
Billy was stunt double for Jack Lambert in "Castle De'ath". Good performance. I hope that I will see Billy as a stuntman in other episodes of season 4, too, he and his brother Joe Cornelius are born fighters.

When Patrick made a personal appearance at the Forbidden Planet book shop in London, he was accompanied by Nosher Powell. |

Yes, Nosher was very friendly and a wonderful person. He was a pal of many performers, Ian Hendry as well. _________________ Denis |

Right now did new study for first 16 episodes of 4 season, finding:
Joe Farrer
stunt double for Patrick Cargill in episode "The Murder Market".
stunt double for Edwin Richfield in episode "Too Many Christmas Trees"
possible stunt double for Alan MacNaughtan in episode "The Town of No Return"
and possible stunt double for Bernard Archard in episode "The Master Minds"
Mike Stevens
stunt double for Patrick Macnee in episode "A Surfeit of H2O". I had doubt, but now I analyzed fight scene better.
Current result of Mike
stunt double for Patrick Macnee in episodes:
Dial a Deadly Number
The Gravediggers
Room Without a View
A Surfeit of H2O
Castle De'ath
Cliff Diggins
stunt double for William Franklyn in episode "Silent Dust"
yes, he was good horseman.
Info about Cliff in whole + comment from Ray Austin here:
http://avengersfanforum.s2.bizhat.com/avengersfanforum-post-28231.html
Cliff was stunt for Patrick in "Silent Dust", too, but it's bit of already known info. _________________ Denis |

Today I worked on website for the episode The Girl from Auntie.
One of the episodes of season 4 which is a fantastic way to make my mood super wonderful.
At this time I watched it and suddenly delved in nostalgic. Oh, I have not seen "The Girl from Auntie" for a long years.
This episode is favourite of Sergey Pronin, one from member of Steedumbrella, and it was at his home that I first watched it. We are enjoyed with many scenes, especially Georgie against an elderly lady in Emma's flat, and the scene where happens the disclosure of Steed and his name is mentioned five times. In general, it's partly like you're watching the TV series Get Smart, but in the British spirit. As "The Girl from Auntie" is a parody on the detectives and spy movies, many things are not taken seriously.
For example, changing the model of Austin taxi and licence plate when Steed arrives from the airport to Emma's house. At first glance it seems that this is a mistake, but since the entire episode is made in a humorous way, we can to assume, somewhere on the road taxi was broke, and the driver called for another, sitting personally behind the wheel in order of own responsibility. Well, any extraordinary thing could be on the road in this episode.
Subject of the stuntmen is one of the interesting, too, if consider this episode:
While until it was clear that in the fight scene Steed vs Ivanoff, Russian played by stuntman Joe Farrer...
...there was some kind of mystery from the beginning for an stuntman who played the role John Steed. He was a young man who hardly resembled any person I knew. However, then, when the frame is changed from the footage "Georgie in coridor comes into direction of the room", I started to do the long freeze shots and to analyze - and oops, understudy at some point, much to the surprise, when turned face in profile, has come to resemble Rocky Taylor. It's just a real "machinations" of the camera, which filmed with such the angles that you get lost in conjectures. Soon, when unknown stuntman raised his eyebrows and was ready to push Joe Farrer in same footage, I realized that it is exactly Rocky Taylor.
So, although Rocky Taylor did double for Patrick in fight with David Bauer, it is possible that in the first fight footage, when stuntman pushes by legs Joe Farrer, standing at the door, there was someone other.
In final fight, Ricky struggled with Romo Gorrara.
This does feeling that in the rest of the season 4 episodes in production order, Rocky was a constant or nearly constant as the stunt double of Patrick. Well, we'll see. _________________ Denis |
